isles 19-20 Marner Offersheet

Created by: scubasteve87
Team: 2019-20 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 1, 2019
Published: Feb. 1, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Isles offer sheet Marner at 10.14 for 5 years (costs 2 1sts, 2nd and a 3rd to leafs)
-Isles resign Nelson and Lee at what I consider fair deals
-Isles move Hickey and Greiss in Cap saving deals
-Sorokin comes over on ELC (1 year per CBA)

Long term outlook sucks for 2020-2021. 13m in space to sign Barzal, Pulock, Toews and Sorokin. Ladd, Komarov and Clutter likely need to be moved. But core is a good mix of young and old for 2019-2020 and should be very competivite with Trotz.

Good luck with that offersheet. You'll have to get much higher than that offer to A get Marner to sign it and B get the Leafs to not match it.

No he doesn’t.. Marner is not worth “much higher” than that

Even if he's not, Leafs match it. Anyways, Marner is smart enough to not leave Toronto, his hometown team, for the Islanders.

You address this, but Isles need to move serious space for that to happen. Amazing team to think about but the latter will be tough.

I don't think so. It all depends on Mathews contract first. I would imagine he asking for at least Eichel Money, could likely demand at least Tavares money. So say that puts him at 11.5 per year, matching Marner puts the leafs at 76 million next year over 15 players. You would have about 7 million to work with for 8 additional roster players assuming an 82 million cap. You would be forced to make Marleau, Kadri or Zaitsev waive the NMC or NTC. Either that or find a taker for Nylanders contract but you would be likely moving him at a discount as his value has continued to go downhill since the start of the season.

That is the entire point and problem with an offer sheet. You can’t offer a fair contract... you need to over pay. Most of the time grossly overpay.

But the other guy was saying even that offer sheet wasn’t enough

Yes probably not enough to get marner to sign, he does want to play in Toronto. Certainly not enough to stop the leafs from matching. Moral here... offer sheet on either mathews or Marner will cost 4 first rounders and you will be over paying marner.

Problem is - Toronto does the same thing to Barzal and you don't have enough $ re-sign him the following year.

Marner apparently wants the same money as Mathews so if the Leafs dont offer him that kind of money and another team does I can see him signing an offer sheet to force thier hands. But that would mean 4 first round picks, quite the price.

Toronto wouldn't have the cap space to offer sheet anyone, let alone Brazal. I could def see Lou doing this.

They would certainly have the money.
Marleau would be off the books. Brown would be off the books. There is 9m + cap increase. Plus money they saved by not signing Marner. They would also have Gardiner off the books

I would be ok with all of this but it's likely someone will pay him more than that for longer than that. I'd rather not sign Nelson for that much money and I don't think Sorokin comes over making ELC money but the rumors are out there. Awesome moves made though and if this is the roster I'm very excited for next season and the future of keeping the main roster intact. Very Well done!

Let me rephrase...The leafs wouldn't be able to offer Brazal a contract that the Isles wouldn't be able to match. The Isles can very easily offer Marner a contract that would completely handcuff the leafs. This is why the leafs are such a prime target for offer sheets. So many stud RFAs coming due at once.

Plus teams have historically been afraid to offer sheet other teams players because of the teams coming right back at there RFAs...I don't think Lou cares. He'll try to stick it to the Leafs as much as possible IMO.

I agree it won't happen, but the Isles would not be able to afford to match. They would have 10m in space to sign Barzal and Pullock + 3 other roster spots. I mean, they could, but they would need to move someone with a decent cap hit.

How so? The money saved by not signing Marner plus a cap increase and then you have Marleau coming off the books and Muzzin. They could certainly offersheet Barzal and the reason everyone is afraid of offersheeting Leafs players is because they have more financial might than anyone in the NHL. They could payout 75% of the contract in the 1st 2 years and very few teams could keep up with that from a budgetary sense.

Yes just like Lou tried to stick it to us by not trading for Martin.... oh wait...

Most GM’s work together nicely, it’s just how the. Game works. The chances of an offer sheet are so low I’m not concerned in the least. Marner has to hit RFA before you can even give it more than a 0% chance...

Looks like someone already explained my point below. You aren't getting Marner to sign an offersheet on a fair offer, you'd have to considerably overpay to land him and that would put the compensation in the 4 1st round picks range. There's a reason the poster here picked that cap # and stopped at 5 years of term to keep it at that 2 1st a 2nd and 3rd spot and that won't get it done.

most GMs do work together "nicely" sure. All it takes is 1 GM to throw a wrench into someone's plans. idk why leaf fans think an offer sheet is impossible. Its rare, but it has happened. This is just a unique scenario which is why offer sheeting someone on the leafs is a serious possibility.

You can’t offersheet someone who isn’t an rfa, even if they make it to rfa you need to offer them something ridiculously stupid for salary. Offer sheets are rare but even more rare is an offersheet that works out for the team sending it.

yes, I'm aware how offer sheets work. And they can be used as a tool by the team using them to screw up the cap of an opponent. If NHL GMs were smart, they would be using them all the time. There is no other major sports league that has a tool to do direct damage to an opponents cap, but don't use it because they're scared of the repercussions.

It’s not just mutual destruction that stops them from happening. It’s also mutual benefit. When you over pay an rfa you set a precedent. GM’s and owners have a mutual benefit in keeping salaries low. If you overpay marner (which this agm doesn’t going to have to go to at least 12m to get marner) now you have to match your own rfa’s to that scale. If offersheets start flying around why would any rfa sign out of their elc? Would they not hold out and wait for their offersheet?

If a team offersheets a player and then over pays them by 25% then loses four first round picks... who is taking damage?

I find it odd that marner and Matthews seem to be main targets and players like Point, Rantanen, Tkachuk and Aho are seldom mentioned. It’s almost like it mirrors the media’s fear mongering that is focussed primarily on Toronto.

This is why I am not too concerned about offersheets. A player like kapanen or Johnsson in my mind are much much better targets. These are players that could be offered market value long term deals that Toronto may not be able to match.
