Trouba Offer Sheet Kapanen

Team: 2019-20 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 14, 2019
Published: Feb. 14, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the leafs match (they probably would) send an offer Sheet to Andreas Johnsson for 3x3.3. They can’t match both without going way over the cap and losing out big on another trade (Kadri or Nylander)

Side Note: what would TOR want for Nylander from Buffalo? I know TOR BUF trades are as rare as Leaf Stanley cups (lol), but what would it take? Could be a fit

There is a simple reason why offersheets dont work. They need to be signed by those players..

Why would KK not sign that deal? It’s probably better than whatever low ball offer TOR gives to try and shove him under the cap.

Kapanen is worth between 3-4mil on 2-4yr deal and thats what he is going to get by Leafs. He loves being a Leaf. If the offersheet is under 4mil, its going to be matched. If over, we are getting 1st rounder+ for him then and roster spot for Bracco. Him and Johnsson are going to be signed for what they are worth. Why nobody offersheets Winnipeg guys? They are in similar position with cap space.. but they are not toronto so no offersheet treath to them..

I think Kappy is gonna stay with the Leafs, because he will get the same money anywhere he goes

You will not get Trouba for that. Add your 2019 first rounder and the Jets will consider it

Nice job, although the offer sheet is a little far fetched.

This sentimentality is bore some. All these guys LOVE being leafs, but they somehow haven't signed an extension when they've been eligible to for 7.5 months

The narrative “love being leafs” is such an unwarranted cocky approach. Money talks. And we all know Dubas is going to offer him 2x2 or some BS

Getting quality players signed takes time. With Dubas especially who is really slow in these ones.. but I think he learned from Nylander negotiations and he started talks with Kappy and Johnssons agents. And maybe they dont want to deal with extensions now. And maybe once TDL is done he would be doing that. I dont know. I know that those guys love playing for Leafs and would be playing for Leafs for a long time. Hopefully we signed them soon enought to be not treathened by offersheets if they somehow decide to sign it which I believe is utter bullcrap some team would overpay for them and Leafs would get picks. Somehow every RFA Leaf would get offersheeted.. no they wouldnt.. this is polarizing topic to argue on. I dont think a single Leaf would be offersheeted. Nylander wasnt offersheeted, Draisaitl wasnt offersheeted two years ago.. nobody was offersheeted since ROR.. maybe they were but it was declined.. offersheets are dead in my eyes. Somehow Brayden Point isnt offersheeted in Tampa who have essentially bigger cap problems than Toronto.. this is certainly maybe just my opinion but I get your opinion and respect that I just feel that offersheets are dead thing nowadays.. I might be wrong and even fricking Ozhiganov would get offersheeted lmao but I dont think any leaf would be offersheeted. You would disagree with me and I get it..

The better question...for me...is why would other GM's let Buffalo scoop up Kapanen for a 2nd rounder? Kapanen won't be offer sheeted.....I honestly believe this....and it has nothing to do with 'he loves toronto so will not sign one'.

The draft pick compensation is a variable scale that moves up with the average league salary...so we won't know for sure until June...but it's reasonable to say that a $4.5m AAV will only cost a 2nd round pick.

Now I ask you all this....how many people here would like to have Kapanen for a 2nd round pick? How many GM's have about $4.5m in cap space to add a top 6 (possibly top 3) winger that can skate like the wind, finish off the rush, and is great on the PK? 15 teams? 20?

If the leafs are struggling to sign Kapanen leading up to July 1st...these teams will be calling the leafs and offering trades well in excess of a 2nd round pick so that they can corner the market and not risk losing him to another team.

Obviously he is going to offer him that low. Thats how negotiations work.. Kapanen would want 4 maybe lets say for sake of this argument and lets say Leafs start at 2.. they would eventually meet in the middle. Thats how negotiations work every single time with every single fricking player.. and also its financially better to get lower money now and be PAID like crazy later.. look at Matthews.. he couldve got 13mil for 7-8yr deal but got less now and lesser term and will likely made much more money. He would make 10-20 mil dollars more by just that move.. if Kapanen or moreso his agent is wise with money, they would sign less term and less money and prove his value and be PAID later much more.. and Kapanen should not be scared for losing NHL position. He is going to be NHL for many many years to come..

I mostly agree with you. Offer sheets really only show their teeth if you are willing to OS 2 RFAs on 1 team and force the other teams hand. That or the team that Holds the rights is up against the 10% offseason cap overage and the OS puts them over, so they literally can’t match. AJ is the better OS target, but the most effective way to do that is to OS KK first, then AJ.

I'm pretty sure that's what the Sharks did to the Blackhawks with Hjalmarsson and then snagging Niemi after Chicago matched. Niemi might have been their target all along...they plant a bug in his agent's ear how much they'll give him in UFA....and make the hawks essentially have to chosse between matching the offer sheet and being able to re-sign Niemi.

Regardless...I still think both Johnsson and Kapanen carry a greater value than a 2nd round pick...so if the Leafs can't sign them, they would sooner trade them than lose them to an offer sheet
