Swap the picks on the EDM trade for that to work.

Spurgeon --> Nylander is questionable as a one-for-one. Spurgeon is good but he isn't worth that package.

Oilers say no. In a year of once again... disappointment. Kassian was our fourth best forward and one of the view brightspots. If I was Toronto I'd look into a swap of Connor Brown for Jujhar Khaira and a 3rd.

Yikes. Massive overpayment for Spurgeon. Even Nylander straight up for him is overpaid.

Kassian isn't a the fit for Toronto and this deal isn't the right idea. If Toronto trades Brown it's going to be to save salary cap. Even with the retained salary on Kassian it's only $600K saved. That's not even a league minimum player contract to open up so it does almost nothing for them. Brown will get picks and a decent prospect. Likely a Ethan Bear or Caleb Jones and a mid round pick

If you seriously think Nylander for Spurgeon 1 for 1 is a fair deal, you may need to check yourself into a mental hospital. & if you think getting a career 4th line forward for only $600K less over a prospect and a pick is more valuable, again, go get your head checked out. Lol.

Yeah nylander for Spurgeon 1 for 1 is not fair at all. Minnesota is getting fleeced...

You’re right dude. The wild would totally trade their best defenseman for a $7mil player who scored 7 goals in 54 games this year. Maybe if you actually did a bit of research and didn’t base value based on the names...

Oh c'mon; Nylander is a top 10 forward in the league...that was the narrative from some Leafs fans before he totally crapped out this season and still is the narrative from some Leafs fans having trouble grasping the current reality. Like I said last fall during the holdout; take away Nylander's linemates and he's good but not a great forward...more like a top 50 forward in the league.

This is hilarious Connor browns trade value is a bottom pairing defenceman or a 3rd round pick. Kassian scored 7 more goals than brown and he makes less than brown too.

Have a grown-up explain to you the ramifications of contract expiration and cap structure. But don't bother asking him to explain player evaluation to you, because you're years away from understanding that.

Wild trade is a bit unfair for Leafs. Spurge is a fantastically underrated defenseman (he's a true #1, better than Suter IMO) but I think the Wild would have to add a touch to get only Nylander. I'm thinking something like Aberg + maybe a depth player like Brown or something. Not sure what the + would be but just something else that has some but not a ton of value. Wild could easily retain half on Spurgeon, too.

Have you ever actually watched Spurgeon play and only payed attention to him? He'd instantly be the best defenseman (defensively speaking) on the Leafs (and before you ask, yes I've watched plenty of Leafs games this year). Spurgeon is our best defenseman and was our best player this year. The Leafs would solve all of their defensive woes by adding him. I get the age and contract bit, but the Leafs are primed to contend now and they need help defensively. Losing Nylander isn't that huge for you since you have Marner, Tavares, Matthews, Johnsson, Kapanen, etc. Nylander has been stuck on the 3rd line most the year anyways.

I wasn't arguing that Spurgeon would be helpful to the Leafs. Absolutely he would be. But straight up for Nylander is ridiculous. As you mentioned, there's age and contract difference. Those are huge in trade value. There's also potential. We know what Spurgeon is. Nylander hasn't reached his yet and could be a future 1C or 1W. Plus you add in that Spurgeon needs a contract extension and really how much less does he come in under Nylander's $6.9M? Not much if at all. So it doesn't really do anything for the cap except for one year. Then take into account that you're paying that extension for Spurgeon's 30+ years instead of paying it for Nylander's prime years.

Again, yes Spurgeon would be a good add for Toronto. Their right side defence is awful. But straight up for Nylander does more harm than good.

Lol, nah you totally know what you're talking about kid. Because trade value is completely based off of a players offensice production for 5 months of 1 season. Yeah that's totally the way the league works.. give your head a shake.

What's hilarious is that you think trade value is based off offensive production in just 1 season. There's so much more that goes into a trade that you need to realize before you sound smart.

I mean, I’m just talking about production compared to his cap hit

So then your argument is the wild should trade their best defenseman because of what he did in PAST seasons? Yeah...that has never backfired on anyone before

For a team (the Leafs) that need to shed cap, I find trades, somewhat OK.
In two weeks after the Bruins series, maybe a retained one year of Spurgeon for Nylander and Kassian for Brown are trades the Leafs would certainly be interested in. It would make the Leafs better next year potentially and clear cap space for 2020/21.
You've dug deep to put Bobylev in any Leaf trade.
