Description
Someone else posted (along with some other stuff seeming crazy) Zaitsev for Wennberg

Not quite cap compliant so some finagling still needed.

Trades

TOR
  1. Bean, Jake
  2. Pesce, Brett
  3. 2019 6th round pick (CGY)
CAR
  1. Kadri, Nazem
  2. Kapanen, Kasperi [RFA Rights]
  3. 2019 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
I've always hated the idea of trading Kadri, but this lets us trade Kadri, stay roughly cap neutral with a new 3C and still have Nylander to slot if injuries.

Plus if Wennberg sucks he can still be bought out next offseason at the discounted rate

Before you say Columbus could do that now, they can, but they are much more cost conscience than cap conscience as was shown with the Clarkson for Horton trade

  1. Brown, Connor

  2. 2019 3rd round pick (CBJ)
CBJ
  1. Zaitsev, Nikita
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (TOR)
  3. 2019 5th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
As I say in the other trade. Wennberg can try out on the leafs third line for a year, if he doesn't work out he can be bought out at a cheaper rate. While Clb could do this, they have been shown to be more money conscience than cap conscience, contrary to the Leafs

Do CBJ really need another RHD? They already have Jones and Savard there, and Nutivaara also plays as a right d-man...

I don't see Carolina taking this. As much as they need offence, they're pretty high on Bean. With all their defence mainly being right handed, he's the long term guy behind Slavic on the left. I could see da Haan moved to make room for Bean in the top 4 in the future. Personally I see a lot of Morgan Reilly in Bean. And Kadri and Kapanen isn't enough to get both of Pesce and Bean. But I agree, Kadri might be the guy to go. I could see it if they think Nylander is ready for 3C mins

& why is Toronto giving up the better picks in the Columbus deal? Zaitsev is cheaper than Wennberg and Zaitsev is at least decent defensively. Wennberg has been brutal and almost invisible all year. That might be a more straight up change of scenery deal

That's an interesting Leafs deal!

I just want to point out that while Wennberg has absolutely sucked this year, I don't think Columbus is throwing the towel on him in anyway yet. He's only 24 and there's still plenty of getting back to 40-50 points in him. He isn't that expensive for 2-3rd line center and with Duchene potentially leaving in free agency there is no NEED to get rid of him at pretty much all costs. He may not be worth much but that is all the more reason to not trade him away then.

Also the Brown deal feels like "lets add a 4th so they an give us an almost 1st round pick." I think it's more apropos to add more to a 3rd round pick they'll probably offer than to upgrade the pick more from a 3rd to a 2nd. IMO send a 3rd and a 4th to Toronto instead of a 2nd but also get a 4th back. That's the way I see it.

They could put Zaitsev in the minors where he belongs if they don't need him

So the Leaf trade four regulars for two Pesce and Wennberg.....and are still two players short and no cap. LHD isn't really needed and really not sure if he can even be an NHLer. No this doesn't work.
Why do the Leaf want to trade a regular RHD Zaitsev for a centre who has declined and has bigger cap hit.
I know the Leafs are going have to get rid at least one good player to be cap compliant, but these trades make the Leafs far worse

Yeah that's well-used value for Wennberg.

Proud to see my Wennburg deal is gaining traction. the same old Pesce/CB to edm deals have been discussed ;

another spot for Kadri i always thought was Dallas (in need of #2C), has #3c faksa and defenders to send back. I love the option to buy out Wennburg at $461k cap hit though

and TBH Zaitsev has been better since the Muzzin arrival, its a matter of do you wanna keep muzzin/Zaitsev, or have to trade WN29/KK24/NK43?

Columbus declines.... we need forwards not D. Especially RHD.... that trade gives us 400k in extract cap space for a team who’s going to likely be no where near a cap crunch.... sorry but I don’t see why this trade would happen from a Columbus stand point...
