Subban

Initial Creation Date: Apr. 29, 2019
Published: Apr. 29, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Penguins need to get faster on the back end and there have been rumors going around that Nashville is ready to move on from PK Subban due to "Character issues." Hornqvist would return to Nashville and Justin Schultz would be used as a one year stopgap before Dante Fabbro takes on a top 4 role in Nashville. I have the Penguins buying out both Johnson and Gudbranson because I see no way they're able to get rid of them via trade in this scenario. Hallander and the 2019 first round pick both would have been tools to help the Penguins facilitate a one-sided cap dump of both players. I brought back Carl Hagelin because he is one of Evgeni Malkin's favorite wingers and the team expressed interest in acquiring him once again prior to the trade deadline. Anton Stralman would be considered a solid 2 year stopgap to allow Calen Addison to fully develop. The acquisition of Subban would really help Kris Letang as he would be in a somewhat reduced role. I see this as a way to help him be more productive and a way to prolong his career with the many injuries/health scares he has already had up to this point in his career.

Like mhockey said they'll want Kessel or some other top 6 talent, because that's what they'll get and need for Subban.

Even if this trade were to be accepted, why buy out Gudbranson? Wouldn’t it just make more sense to keep the Gudbranson/Petterson pairing as the 3rd pair? Then make Riikola/Subban the second pair and Dumo/Letang as the first pair all while trading Maatta? You’d get more cap space plus an asset back...not to mention, you don’t need Hallander or the first to trade either of JJ or Gudbranson. Especially not Gudbranson.

I feel like this is a situation that is similar to what happened with Kessel in Toronto. Nashville hasn't performed well in the playoffs since being a cup finalist in 2017. I think PK is being scapegoated as the reason the team has underperformed. This could force David Poille to make a panic move and I think he'd definitely love to have Hornqvist back. I think of Nashville as a place Hornqvist would accept a trade to as he had many successful years there and fits Nashville's style of play. This is one of those best case scenario things so we'll see.

I kept Maatta around because I don't think Riikola is as great as people think he is. He's a 6/7 guy when he's at his very best. I wouldn't be opposed to trading Maatta to Montreal for someone like Lehkonen and using the remaining cap space to find a cheap serviceable LHD in free agency. Obviously if they hold on to Gudbranson my idea of signing Stralman is scrapped completely.

right on. People are crazy. Let Nashville deal with that mediocre talent that has an inflated 9 million dollar salary cap hit. The penguins don't want any part of that crap nor should they.
They need to take on 9 million cap hits like they need a new hole in their head. His contract was a huge mistake that MTL was lucky to get out from under and now Nashville is stuck with it. No need to bring that mess here.

I mean, maybe other GMs would panic and make a bad trade like this, I just see Poile as smarter then that. All Nashville is getting for Subban is: a mid round first, a B/B+ prospect, a top 4 D, and an aging middle 6 forward. I think subban can fetch at least a Kessel type player. if this deal happened id be all over it, I just don't see it happening

No rumblings of character issues here in Nashville. Here is the situation:

With the emergence of Fabbro, the Preds now have five viable d-men. Fabbro is on an ELC, Ekholm’s contract is too good to move, Josi needs to be re-signed (which will be a substantial raise), Ellis’ extension kicks in this summer, and then we’re all well-versed on PK.

Nashville needs firepower upfront and they have more than enough on the blue line. A defensemen gets moved in the hopes of putting more dynamic goal scorers on the ice. Given the info above, it’s pretty clear PK is the one who likely gets moved.

But that’s what you have Maatta as anyway, so why not get that much more cap flexibility by using Riikola? Getting Lehkonen would mean our 13th forward is better than Matt Cullen and Garrett Wilson lol
