The leafs will be tight, but not so tight that they will have to give up a guy like Liljegren.

I understand the reasoning, but the Bickell trade is arguably the worst one Bowman has ever made and never should’ve happened. I wouldn’t go copying it if I were Toronto

As a Kings fan I would love to take another of the Leafs best prospects. Also you forgot Alex Iaffalo!

Apples and oranges with Bickell and Marleau. Aside from the fact that Marleau can still play, there are teams that would love the dead cap space between his salary and cap hit in an effort to get above the cap floor. Could save a team over 3 million while getting a character player to mentor the youth.

Agreed and Bowman had a much worse situation on his hands. Bickell, who wasn't anything special even at his peak, was coming off a 25 games played with only 2 assists season. Marleau may have slowed down but he's still considered NHL royalty. His leadership is highly valued. Bickell had virtually nothing going for him at the time.

The Bickell trade wasn't a good one for Stan. 100% agree. Marleau is definitely a better player than Bickell was at the time of the trade 100% agree. There's a bunch more to this trade though.

A.) The picks going back are different They might be the same draft...round, but Pick #50 (in the Bickell trade) is very different than pick #33.
B.) The amount of cap is different. Marleau has $2.25M more than Bickell had.
C.) The biggest part of all...Liljegren and Turbo are NOT really that close in quality of prospect. I'll give you that they're close in drafted position, but everything after being drafted is quite different. When Turbo was traded he had a Stanley Cup and 10 points in those playoffs. People KNEW he was going to be good. He just needed more ice time to develop. THIS is the reason the trade was soooooo bad. AND again I do agree it was terrible. Timothy's been hurt a bunch and probably not seeing NHL ice time next year either. Timothy will be a nice piece, but I don't think it's all that realistic to expect Turbo type level of play from Liljegren. NO?

Yeah was definitely surprised they gave up on Turbo. I think that may have had something to do with coach Q though also because I remember hearing rumblings that he wasn't his type of player and questioned whether he would fit in long term with the club. With that said, regardless of how they might have felt about him, they could found another deal that made more sense without including a former 1st rounder that had been putting up decent production at his age. I have to admit though, I didn't think turbo was going to be as good as he has been in Carolina. I think that just happened to be a perfect scenario for him also.

I see what you mean. The difference in picks is noteworthy and I agree that Teravainen is, was and will be a better player than Liljegren. For all we know, Toronto selects a guy like Thompson or Korczak in the draft with #33 and replaces Liljegren without thinking twice. I just think its a bad idea to give up on young players until you've seen them in the NHL. It's not suprising to me that a 18-19 year old has struggled in a league dominated by men and he now has the experience of two seasons in the AHL and I wouldn't be surprised if next year he hits his stride. I know the Leafs are being careful with him, in terms of call-ups, but if he plays well and the defense struggles, it would be foolish not to give him a look.

I do agree with you, but I think the Leafs would be better off moving someone different
