Overpay Marner by the same amount as Matthews and Nylander and be done with it

Created by: BCAPP
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 8, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So I think most would agree Nylander by comparables was probably worth low to mid 6's for term. So he's over paid by 10%

I would argue Matthews deserved halfway between Eichel and McDavid (all three are franchise C's, a year apart in age/draft. McDavid is the best, then Matthews, then Eichel.) That means 11.25/8 years the year Eichel/McDavid were signed which prorated to the new cap of 81.5 would be 11.53 for EIGHT years. As Matthews was only signed for 5 years it should be lower, around 10.55 we'll say. Thus Matthews was overpaid by 10% as well.

That leaves us to Marner. For his comparables we'll use the highest paid RFA winger coming off an ELC in the last decade: Vladimir Tarasenko and the recently signed Sebastien Aho contract (more goals, less points, significantly worse linemates and a C vs a W, frankly Marner should be below, but whatever, will be nice).

Before people point out that Tarasenko had only 37 goals and 73 points in his contract year, compared to Marner with 26 g and 94 pts, you have to realize how much scoring is down.

Tarasenko had 37 goals, but the most that year was 53
Tarasenko had 73 points but the most that year was 87

Marner had 26 goals but the most that year was 51
Marner had 94 points but the most that year was 128

Thus for their contract season Tarasenko was tied for 5th for goals and tied for 10th for points
Marner was 69th for goals and 11th for points

So if anything Tarasenko was better with inferior linemates.

Again while 94 points sounds so much better than 73, you have to recognize that the league high 128 vs 87

So.....
Tarasenko 7.5/8, prorated to today's cap is 8.37/8
Aho is 8.5/5

So I guess 8.5/5 is the more generous number. So 9.35 million for 5 years.

Nylander and Matthews were both overpaid by 500k. Which means that Marner should be getting around 8.5M on 3yr deal.

On a 3 year deal Marner is worth 3 million maximum.

Pretty much on the spot description....in my books Matthews should be 5 x 9,5M which would make Marner being signed for 6 x 9,5M by now already and next years D overhaul would have 16M for 3 Ds at disposal......

Sounds about right but I would prefer 1 more year. 9.5×6 that way he could see what Mathews and Nylander get on their next deals and JT's contract would expire at the same time. I think that makes the most sense for everyone but hey that's just my opinion.
