Evaluating the rumored Faulk trade a year later

Description
Before people tell me I went too high on Faulk's contract - Consider Hayes. He only signed in PHI because he knew they were overpaying him. Apparently ANA is on Faulk's NTC and he won't waive it unless he is extended. They probably have to drastically overpay Faulk to make this trade work. The term is the only area I'm unsure on.

It would be between 6.5-6.9x5 if it happens. As for your trade.. Ritchie>>>Foegele and Kase>Faulk

That Faulk contract is the defenseman equivalent of Kevin Hayes' deal: a significant overpay for a guy who isn't bad but isn't great either

Call me crazy, but wouldn't Gardiner be a much better comparable (being a defensman and all) than Hayes?

Similar style, similar production...... no way in hell I pay $7.5 million a year for that. Not based on 4 years at just over $4 million.

If $6.5 million was Faulk's ask, we all see why Gardiner is a Cane. That is brilliant cap management by Waddell.

Yeah Hayes is not a good comparable. but I think everyone and their mother knows Gardiner got wayyyyy less than he probably should have. Myers making 6M, Stralman making 5.5M, Edler making 6M. I think Faulk would have plenty of reason to think 6M+ easily next year. Especially if he had a decent year this coming season. Not saying he's worth it just that he would reason to think he's worth it and not be wrong based on others in the past.

Ducks have 18m to spend on 10 players (assuming Kesler plays), next season. Does a team really want to spend 6m plus on Faulk, and give up assets to get him?

Not sure if the Gardiner signing was "planned brilliance" by Waddell but it seemed to turn out the way. When other GMs were spending highly in the first week of July, the Canes held onto their cap. IN September there was more players available than cap...then Waddell had a choice of what UFA to sign at a modest cost.
I still wonder if the Canes would have been better not taking on the Marleau's 6.5m cap hit and forgoing the 1st rounder. They could have boosted their roster even more with at least some of that 6.5m.

Good GMs don't worry about UFAs walking. Let's say Faulk wants and gets 6.5m. Let him go Just spend that 6.5m better valued player(s).

A lot has simply fallen on Waddell's lap lol. Even Pierre Dorion would say yes to Neideritter for Rask lol

Seems everything is going Waddell's way. If I am him, ride the wave!
