You're asking a very specific question, if I understand your AGM correctly. Not is this something the Oilers would do, but if this would be an even deal? My answer is no, simply because what McDavid brings to table far outweighs the potential of the assets you have going the other way. Sure, Makar seems like a no-doubt top-end defender, but he's still awfully young and although his skating and offense seems on point, what will distinguish him in the future from other young D in the NHL is his defensive game. It does exist in Makar's game, but it's not at "top-pairing" calibre yet. That's something that comes with experience. I think Makar has Duncan Keith-in-his-prime potential. As for Byram, he might be a left-handed Makar lite, he might be more of a Justin Faulk/Jake Gardiner type, where the metrics are good, the skating is good and the offense is good, but the defense isn't quite there. Still, top-4 four potential. As for the 1st rounder, that's still a question mark, and will be until the draft. Nevertheless, unless the Oilers made this deal and then lucked out (as they have in past drafts lol) with Quinton Byfield, I say the Oilers would still lose this deal in both the short and long term. Plus, McDavid, so I have been told, is a really good leader and captain, so there are intangible qualities that are even tougher to measure as part of this "even" deal. Good try though.
