I dont think Edmonton is about to do a big trade like that, also you rarely see goalies traded during the season especially if they will become the starter.

Why would we trade for him if we could get him in free agency

First of all Washington is a legit contender to the cup they won’t trade him. Even if they know they won’t offer him a contract this summer. Late postseason have show that you are better with depth in goal.

Koski puts up better numbers behind a worse defense,

Koski and 1st with Holtby extending is about the max return considering his struggles the last 3 years.

Holtby will want 5-7 years @ around $9 million Edmonton can't afford him. And Edmonton would probably be seeking a much younger goalie not one that will be turning 31 years old at the start of his new contract.

Yup just like Carey Price and Sergei Bobrovsky those contracts will be brutal in a few short years.

This made me laugh. Spoken like a (current) fanbase that has no idea what playoff success is. Well, even what making the playoffs is (1 appearance in last 13 seasons)

"Why try to win when we can just keep drafting top-5?"

Inclined to agree. top prospect, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, slightly younger occasionally-decent goalie? Even for an all time great, that's probably an overpay. Just take out the word, "extending," because it's never accurate in hockey. Doesn't happen. Teams trade first, then negotiate with new players, and usually give them close to what they expect.

At the posted price, I think you're right. But with Koskinen on the books at 4.5, the Oilers aren't winning any bidding wars for Holtby, and coming out of it with cap space to put a team in front of him. So there's probably a price Edmonton would pay to upgrade from Koskinen to Holtby, even if it isn't a top prospect and a year's worth of draft picks.

Holtby will either stay in Washington on a team friendly contract (not sure this is likely), or he will be on whatever team has the dumbest GM (you choose your own answer)...

If the Oil felt Holtby was the better option to win this year, an even trade of these goalies might work. Yes, Holtby has struggled for a few regular seasons but he did win in '18. For the Capitals, it appears highly unlikely they will be able to re-sign him with Ovie being a higher priority going forward. Sam and Koski could be a formible duo in D.C.

Or they could wait as you say.
