Zucker Rumor Trade

Created by: RWellington
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 27, 2020
Published: Jan. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Would/Should EDM trade their 1st for 3+ yrs of Zucker, a proven goal scorer who can skate and plays with an edge.

Would Zucker waive his NTC to play in EDM, not likely. Would he waive to play with McDavid, possibly.

Does a 1st, 3rd and Puljujarvi (Gags + Khaira adds for cap balance) do it for Minny, do they prefer a more seasoned prospect like Benson or Yamamoto ?

I would say that's a pretty big overpayment. Puljajarvi a 2nd and a cap dump might get it done.

If i'm Minny and all that is being offered is Puljujarvi and a 2nd then there is zero chance I deal this guy.
Hes good for 20+ goals a year, 40+ points and has done this while playing in Minny. Imagine the McDavid bump to his production. Furthermore he is locked up for 3 more seasons beyond this year, there is value in the fact he has term to deal.

I think it's smarter to not include JP to get a deal done. Too much of a question mark for everyone. I think Yamamoto would do well learning from a successful, smaller guy like Zuccarello. If Yamamoto and a 2020 1st is too steep due to how deep this draft is said to be, Oilers could do a 2021 1st which shouldn't hurt as they'll have Zucker on for a few years. Or if Yamo and a 1st is too much in general. Could do a 2020 2nd + 4th? Add Khaira and Gagner for cap balance.

The cap dumps have negative value, and Pittsburgh will put together a more enticing offer than the Oilers can afford.

This is one of those deals that looks good for Mini at first, then Zucker scores 35-40 goals beside McDavid and mini is criticized (unfairly) for dealing a 40 goal scorer for futures.
If Mini is moving Zucker (which is or at least has been true) then that package is great. Probably an overpay for EDM, but with 4 years left on his deal it could be really good for the oilers

I hear this so often! Heard this about Kreider too. It's good for the Avs but lame for Canada.

Its usually not just about Hockey, player wanting to in Canada, gotta take family/wife into account and sometime their family just cant continue their lives in Canada based on careers, etc

Puljujarvi, 2020 1st, and Gagner.
Or
2020 1st and 3rd.
Or
Yamamoto and Puljujarvi

Any of these packages work for the Oilers?
(I would need reassurance that Puljujarvi will play in the NHL)

Hey will want to play for sure. Teams are just iffy on giving him minutes, especially on lower lines when he kind of just tries play offensively only and nothing else.

The cap dump... singular has negative value but only so much as he's on an expiring deal. If he carried term beyond this season then it would take away from the package drastically however considering the fact at seasons end he no longer has a contract Minny will be fine taking his money on temporarily.

As for the Pitt comment, Pitt has an offer on the table that Minny hasn't accepted (or so we are told) so how can you be so certain about their willingness to buy on Zucker??

EDM won't likely deal two prospects together as they need cheap talent to supplement their forward core. With that being said option #1 is best imo and without a doubt JP will come back to play once he is dealt.

Because that's their base offer, And Zucker has made it known he doesn't want a Canadian market. And again the assets the oil would need to move to aquire Zucker are not affordable, the team is situated to make the playoffs but only due to the weak Pacific Division, it'd be foolish to sell the very few pieces Edmonton has in the cupboards for 1 player. Yes he improves your team but not to the point where the oil are a lock 100+ point team

Great comment, EDM fans don't seem to realize the upside in paying just above market for a player that would easily score 30+ with McDavid. The 1st should never be an easy trade however when adding a sure scorer with term you take that risk.

The assets that i suggested EDM move in this trade scenario do not help this current edition of Oilers, perhaps the 2020 1st helps the 2022 Oilers but not this year or likely next. JP isn't interested in playing in EDM so he doesnt help nor would the 2021 3rd help for years if ever at all. So what assets are suggesting they would need to move in order to acquire Zucker? Magic beans (draft picks) don't help teams make the playoffs and EDMs window with McDavid may be smaller than we know.

The fact that EDM's road to the playoffs is made easier by the fact the Pacific is weaker is more reason to add a Zucker. The goal isn't to be a 100pt team, the goal is to make the dance and hopefully win it all. If EDM can make it to the dance their 1st two rounds would come against either Pacific division teams and/or Wild card teams. And by all accounts means an easier road to the Conference finals.

I can't argue the Zucker to Canada thing because hes not the only one but this is a fantasy GM world and I was showing my thoughts to a potential Zucker deal.

JP has very little value, I agree that most over value what 1st rnd pick is or could be. The goal should never be go all in once and hope for the best, it should be to improve now and in the future

And just keep wasting prime years of McDavid and Draisaitl, this trade has pretty good value for the Oilers.

You get it, so many others don't, it's like they think that the 24th overall 1st round draft pick or wherever the Oilers will be drafting will be a sure thing that'll step in in his draft year and will be a high end contributor but in reality it rarely works out like that.

Seriously how many years of McDavid and Draisaitl's primes are the Oilers supposed to waste hoping every draft pick is gonna develop into the supporting cast they need??

Not saying they should sell the farm and they should absolutely stay away from pricey rentals but if they can get a proven winger with a good amount of term like Zucker has they should definitely consider moving a 1st for said winger.

In university my colleagues and i studied roster balance and how it correlated to team success, measured by winning %. The balance of a roster was derived by those who were drafted and developed by the team they played for, exceptions were not granted for those traded as prospects (deemed outliers) and those of external additions, so either Free Agents or Trades. Obviously there is flaws to to this test however it did shed a light on roster construction. Our sample range was lock-out rosters to 2015 (keep in mind this was done while I attended university).

What we found was teams constructed of 50-65% homegrown players were the most successful where teams of too many external additions typically finished mid standings and teams of too many homegrown players finished near the bottom. Exceptions to the rule at that time were the penguins & Flames (heavily homegrown and a high win % & the Flames high external addition low win %).

One day i will dig up this case study we presented and maybe use it to update the data but anyway this has been a long winded way of saying teams long term success isnt exclusively tied to drafting & developing. Teams need to supplement their rosters with external additions. So would EDM going after a Zucker or a Saad be detrimental to their future success, not likely considering they have pieces like McDavid & Draisaitl which means they are more than likely in the supplementing stage rather than the draft and develop stage. With that being said future commodities such as 1st round picks need to be traded with discretion and imo never more than one at a time and never in consecutive seasons. Breaking the line of drafted and developed players could yield long term negative effects.

imagine getting that easily riled up over the pure mention of McDavid not being the best player on the planet, even when its tongue and cheek. Oiler fans are like shooting fish in a barrel when it comes to McDavid.

If he doesnt win the Hart this season, the fan base is going to be raging online for weeks, cant wait for the chaos
