As a "change of scenery" for both players I like this deal.
AG needs to show the NHL that he is worth more than a PTO next year

Galchenyuk is out producing/60 Athanasiou in offense, physicality, and defense... is Athanasiou going to need a PTO offer next year too?

Galchenyuk for Gagner is a very poor trade for the Pens.

Man people do stand up for AG and his 5 goals.
Of course AA isn't gonna get a PTO, he's an RFA. I was goofing off a bit with the AG PTO, but come on man? the guys been terrible this year. Comparing him to AA doesn't make much sense either. Playing in pitt on a contending team with opportunity to play with Crosby and Malkin or playing on a bottom feeder in Detroit with fringe NHLers.

AG: 0.41 G/60 ... 1.51 P/60
SG: 0.50 G/60 ... 1.49 P/60

AG: $4.9M, UFA 2020
SG: $3.15M, UFA 2020

I'm not seeing any reason to be upset with this trade for the Pens. Unless you think Galchenyuk is suddenly going to turn his season around? But the fact that his P/60 was lower last year (1.26) AND the year before (1.39) indicate that that's not a realistic expectation.

playing a bit with McD help, and as i said, Gagner is high AHL, Galch is fringe NHL... really not much of a difference imo, I just think Galch is viewed higher around the league bc he scored 20 goals and is still somewhat young

But Galchenyuk doesn't play with Crosby or Malkin. Does Athanasiou play on a bottom feeding team, or is Detroit a bottom feeder because it relies on players like Athanasiou? (Its B) but you might be right, the Athanasiou/Galchenyuk comparison might not make sense as Athanasiou gets much more opportunity in Detroit... it's not fair to Galchenyuk.

At least last year galchenyuk got 20 goals pretty much (he missed some time so he definitely would’ve hit over 20 if healthy). Galchenyuk is worth more than ganger. Ganger has negative value imo. He’s not an NHLER anymore. Galchenyuk in the right situation can bounce back

The numbers say otherwise. Gagner is tied with Kopitar in P/60 this season - is he not an NHLer anymore either?

He has 11 points in 30 games. 4 goals. That’s nothing to brag about. Last year he was an AHLer for most of the season.

Nobody's bragging about anything. I'm simply pointing out the error in your statement.

FYI Galchenyuk has played more with Malkin than Gagner has with McDavid.

And I don't think age matters much when you're talking about a pure rental - how they're playing right now / this season is the only thing that matters. Age is only considered when looking at signing an extension.

So although I think Galchenyuk will get a larger contract than Gagner next summer, that has nothing to do with his rental value.

For whatever reason it does, I feel like teams will be way more willing to think hey! He'll bounce back (he won't) and give up something for him (also McDavid is the best offensive player in the league by a very large margin)

Ganger is a pure cap dump. Galchenyuk won’t fetch much but he’ll get a better return than that. Look at players who struggled on pit and improved on their next teams: perron, brassard, Pearson, etc... I think galchenyuk will be a decent player next year and I think ganger’s NHL career will be over shortly

We aren't talking about next year as both players are pending UFA's. I don't know why this is so hard.

Irrelevant. Since we're talking about being zoomed this year only, lets look at the two player's P/60:

Malkin: 3.31
McDavid: 2.71

So Galchenyuk has had an advantage over Gagner there, too.

It's what happens when you saddle even the best player with 3rd / 4th liners. Since Tippett moved Draisaitl off McDavid's line, the Oilers 5v5 scoring charts look like this:

Draisaitl: 3.28 P/60 (18th in the league since December 30th, 100 minute minimum)
Yamamoto: 3.24 (20th)
Nugent-Hopkins: 3.23 (21st)
Sheahan: 2.56 (51st)
McDavid: 2.12 (90th - still a 1st line rate but just barely)
Archibald: 1.98 (103rd)

Ouch. Holland's #1 job for the deadline is to bring in a winger for McDavid.

He's scoring at a 2nd line rate because he's playing with McDavid part of the time. And PKing like a demon. Nice player, I hope they re-sign him (cheap).

Yeah, good for him, I remember him in PIT (and ARZ) it was... Rough, for the most part

Dude galchenyuk is a lot better than ganger. Just cause he’s struggling on pit doesn’t mean he’s an AHLer.

This really blew up but here’s my hot take...a Galch Trade seems like one of those moves where GMJR comes away with a young piece that can be serviceable. Someone like Cooper Marody comes to my mind.

1. He was worse last year and the year before.
2. I never said he was an AHLer, keep beating the straw man.
