If cap goes down that much there will be 2 buyouts. I think instead of trading Marner the leafs could take a bad contract along with a top 4 defenseman
But I think doing this would be fine

Marner will not be traded and is a franchise player for the Leafs. Oilers will trade McDavid before the Leafs trade Marner.

The NHLPA and the NHL would never agree to a cap decrease that low. It would spell disaster for the league. The cap is either going to stay the same go up by .5m or down by 1m at the most.

They already have 3 franchise forwards, why would they need Marner?

You do realize that Marner led the team in points in his second and third year and would have led team in points in his first year if he was fully healthy and again this year in his 4th year if he was not injured. Shanahan and Dubas will be looking for a new job if they trade Marner.

Well in this hypothetical situation, you'd have to trade Tavares/Marner/Mathews to ensure the best possible team. You're telling me you'd choose one of the other 2? (Tavares has NMC)

Regardless Marner's points are very deceiving. A lot of second assists, points boosted by PP time adding to the fact he has average even strength play and below average defending.

Why do folk post trades like this? Can Nashville can an additional 4.5m in cap. Can Edmonton take Johnsson 3.4m in cap. It all so Leaf oriented these type of posts.
But do you really think that is the cap goes down to 75m and 15% of the pre virus prediction, don't you think that there will be salary reductions for ALL players?

Why is that the answer? Wouldn't the owners and players negotiate a salary reduction for ALL players. Most NHLPA members are mid to lower cap players, They don't to be losing future money just so the contracts of the higher priced stars are guaranteed.
