What If Leafs Signed Stamkos In 2016

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 6, 2020
Published: Apr. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Obviously I’m aware that Stamkos only wanted to resign with the Lightning, but if he went to the Leafs instead, then they could’ve traded Marner for a young defenseman.

In a few years Marner will have a few 100 point seasons under his belt and you might actually stop trying to trade him for lotto tickets

Quoting: leafs101
well that's an interesting statement to make. he will be lucky to make the nhl

Woo has the tools to make an impact in the NHL. He’s a good skater, he’s big, physical & very smart defensively. You’ll see.

Still. Other Than One Other Person you are the worst at making ACGMs. Atleast try and not make them god awful. And the leafs would have gone with Kaeden Korzack not Hoglander

Fair enough they would’ve picked Korzak, but for my team, they are already stacked on the right side with Manson, Liljegren, Holl & Woo.

I know exactly what kind of player Woo is, that's why i know he's not someone you target in a trade for Mitch Marner. I'd say "You'll see" but what you see is some weird stuff if what you post here is any indication

Probably not but the purpose of this trade is not to get the guy with the highest value, it’s to get the best fit. Woo is that.

So you don’t target a good right hand shot shutdown defenseman in a trade for Marner? Surprising!

Yeah, see, that's what im talking about. You get so caught up on a single angle of a player or what you think a player brings, you are incapable of seeing the bigger picture as to why their value is not remotly close to where you think it is. Just because Jett Woo is a decent RHD prospect that would be nice for the leafs to have, it does not make them a viable return for Mitch Marner. especially since the only reason you seem to be obsessed with trading Marner is that he costs like 1.5 million too much per year.

Jett Woo wouldnt even be the leafs best defensive prospect, and the leafs dont have any spectacular defensive prospects.

Oh my god tears of joy trading Marner to an equivalent of two 2nd rounders... I honestly think I saw some Leafs fans moving Kapanen for that exact return.

Honestly if Marner had been dealt near the draft, it would've been to a top prospect. He didn't have a huge contract then and was off a 94 point season...he would've gotten virtually any prospect that hadn't made their debut in the league in exchange. Q.Hughes, Makar, one of the TOP5 picks from the 2019 draft, you name it. All of them for Marner would've been considered as "bad for the Leafs" back then.

Yeah well Stamkos was never going to leave Tampa, He was just testing the market to see what his value was.

I think this is some major revisionist history here in the same way that Isles fans are saying that JT was always going to leave and screwed them. From what it sounds like, Lou screwed up another one of his superstar free agent pitches (that makes 3 btw - Stammer, JT, Panarin).

You do know just because a player is from Ontario doesn’t automatically mean he wants to play for Toronto might be fun to think that but reality much different

Once a sap sucker always a sap sucker! Stamkos just chose the warm weather and familiarity of Tampa over his cold weather home town. Not that there's any thing wrong with being a sap sucker. Other than Aunt Jemima and all her minions, who doesn't love maple syrup? My brother lives in Vermont, which I suppose makes him an American sap sucker - But we still love him. Especially when he brings gifts of maple syrup and those (soft candies or cookies ? - not sure what they're called) made with 🍁 Syrup. I'm currently living overseas and one could get 🍁 syrup where ever you are in the world, but I really miss those candies/cookies(?). Anyway, pardon the interruption and thanks for listening.

Yeah I’m aware Liljegren & Sandin are better than Woo but he is exactly what Toronto needs. He’s going to be really good as well.
