This team would look a lot better if they didn't make that unnecessary Lehner trade

How do you predict a 24 team playoff would exist?

I truly believe they're going to give Ian Mitchell some time. I'd also try to create two "shutdown" lines. EDM only has 1 line that can score and their going to ride it as far as it'll take them. (obviously that sick powerplay) If you can try to load share than defensive responsibility I think the Hawks have a decent shot at this.

Yes, wouldn't be surprised to see Ian Mitchell, but then again, do you throw him in during playoff hockey when he hasn't had time to practice and condition with the team?

I wonder if De Haan will be able to return? Shaw? If you're looking for a shutdown line then Keith Murphy will play heavy minutes along with that 1st and 4th line playing big minutes against the Oilers 1st line and PP.

I think you're joking, but not 100% sure. The Hawks were pretty firmly out of the playoffs @ the TDL before all this COVID stuff happened. We can't blame Bowman for trading away a pending UFA.

I like the combo of Keith Murphy especially because Maatta will likely play our PK so that spreads the workload.

Keith - Murphy was far and away our best pairing, problem is overloading one line and not spreading those two out, but to your point; the Oilers have one scoring line so that can work if you do the matchups right.

I believe all the college kids that signed after the season was suspended (like Mitchell, K'Andre Miller, Scott Perunovich etc etc) are ineligible, as are Russian players that would normally be able to sign I.E Kaprizov. Also I believe the time table on De Haan pinned him returning for training camp next season so that would put it in late july so he would be cutting it close

It was a bad trade either way. He was doing great. They should've signed him at the end of the season and let the older goalie with concussion history walk. Now that they've burnt that bridge, LETS GO CROW! lol

What scares me is the hawks beating Edmonton just to lose draft positioning and get destroyed in the next round

It would be an interesting series, the Hawks play the Oilers tough all the time. Mcdavid and Draisaitl are great, but it's really hard to bet against Toews and Kane, you can bet they see this as a gift to try and push for that 4th cup and really be the true modern dynasty. It's probably not realistic, but hey who knows

And if we've learned anything from earlier this season, don't let De Haan determine that he's ready to come back early! If anything make him sit out longer than necessary.

While I don’t know if the rules changed, guys like Makar and Kreider finished college and jumped right into the playoffs. And Mitchell’s contract doesn’t have terms on it likely for this very reason. If they signed him starting 20-21 then yeah he can’t play but if he’s signed 19-20 season then I would believe he can.

I think he still needs the 9 games turn burn through the year though...no? Honest question, I don't have the answer.

Pretty sure if he plays 10 games he burns through it, he can play 9 though.

According to Capfriendly, in 2011-2012 Kreider played 0 regular season games and 18 playoff games for NYR after signing an ELC on April 10th 2012 and burned a year of his contract. Same for Makar. Signed a 3 year ELC on April 19, 2019 and played 10 playoff games for Colorado and this season is considered his second season of his ELC.

So my guess is either 1) 9 game rule applies to playoffs as well or 2) playoffs automatically burn a year despite games played.

Idk of any other player off top of my head who played playoffs straight from college and played less than 9 games to see what happens to contract.

"Due to COVID-19 causing the NHL to suspend its season March 12, the league altered its longstanding "reserve list" rule and prohibited any contract to be signed with a 2019-20 start date. This only affects a handful of players, guys like Montreal's Alexander Romanov, Florida's Grigori Denisenko, the Islanders' Ilya Sorokin, Chicago's Ian Mitchell, and St. Louis' Scott Perunovich." - Michael Russo
