Minnesota Analysis from an Outsider

Description
(From @KakkoForMauriceRichardAward)

I propose to you an analysis of your favorite team...

You need to include:

- your favorite team's strength(s)
- its weakness(es)
- how you would try to fix the weakness without affecting the strength too much
- a CBO is allowed (but not mandatory)
- a flat cap
- coaches can be fired

Copy this so that others can see this idea to keep us entertained a bit until real hockey (hopefully) comes back.

I'm doing this basically because I enjoy talking to the Minnesota guys.

Strengths: The long-awaited arrival of Kirill Kaprizov heralds the possibility that the Wild may be contenders in a few seasons as new GM Bill Guerin puts his stamp on the team. The emergence of Kevin Fiala and the continued development of Joel Eriksson Ek, Luke Kunin and Jordan Greenway give reason for hope, as do some of the youngsters in the pipeline: forwards Matthew Boldy, Adam Beckman and Alex Khovanov, defenseman Calen Addison and goalie Kaapo Kahkonen all show promising potential as top-line personnel. If the Wild can also get some additional quality out of players like Nico Sturm, Ryan Donato, Carson Soucy, Brennan Menell and perhaps others, management can focus on some specific shortcomings.

Weaknesses: The most glaring shortcoming is quality at center. With Mikko Koivu and Eric Staal aging out, Minnesota doesn't really have a top-6 centerman right now. Staal surely still has some good games left in him, and the Wild may bring Koivu back on a one-year contract to bridge the gap to the expansion draft, but they really need to start serious work on filling that hole. The 11th overall pick in this year's draft should help; I have Anton Lundell available there in my mocks and other possibilities there include Dawson Mercer, Dylan Holloway and Seth Jarvis. The Pittsburgh pick acquired in the Zucker trade (which also brought them Addison) could deliver someone like Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary or Mavrik Bourque. Any of these prospects would be welcome additions.

The defense is set with no expected turnover from this year, but disappointed somewhat. The Wild were 22nd in goals against. They need to perform better in order for the Wild to be relevant.

Goaltending is questionable. Devan Dubnyk had a poor year, perhaps distracted by non-hockey issues. Alex Stalock stepped in well when required. Kaapo Kahkonen could be a #1 goalie in a couple of years.

Bottom line: this will be a rebuilding year for Minnesota, and the Wild will need to have their best prospects actually turn out in order to be a serious contender in the near future. But most of all, it is critical to fill that void (I don't think I'm putting it too strongly) at center in order for them to succeed. To underline that point, I am leaving the roster short one player. It is unfortunate that the free-agent market this year doesn't really include any solutions to that problem.

I wouldn't put much of that 22nd goals against on the Wild d men, Dubnyk was next level awful. Though Stalock gave the Wild a chance to win he really didn't put up stellar statistics himself.

This seems like a very easy team to analyze.

In terms of Forwards/Dmen it's one of the best teams in the league. In terms of the on-ice metrics, this is the literally best defense in the entire league.

It's also the worst goaltending team by a country mile, worse than Detroit who's worse than New Jersey.

Quite literally if you swap Dubnyk with someone like Kuemper or Georgiev, you're looking at a 100 point team. That's how bad the goaltending crop is in Minnesota.

That's a good analysis!

I'm really looking forward to seeing Kaprizov, when he comes over.

The defense, really the team defense as a whole, was stellar last season. The goalies were just downright bad. Give them a league average goalie and they'd be a top-4 in the West team right now.

You're off on Koivu too. He's been a 4C quality player for most of the season.

I agree with most of this.

Center depth is absolutely brutal and I'm not sure we'll be able to get more than one additional productive year out of Staal. Guerin needs to figure something out before next offseason, whether it's an offer sheet for Cirelli or a trade using Dumba or Brodin.

IMO unrestricted free agency is generally a bad way to solve a big problem unless you land the cream of the crop (like Tavares a couple years ago, Panarin last year, and Pietrangelo this year). Gotta build through the draft or make trades for core players and supplement your depth with free agency. I'm guessing it's another year of being good enough to make the playoffs but not good enough to make a run unless we get a 1C and Kahkonen turns out to be the real deal.

I agree with you that free agency rarely if ever solves any major problem(s). It usually is only good for addressing depth situations.

A lot of this is pretty on point, coming from a wild fan. I think it may be possible they use some of the defense along with a pick, maybe the Pittsburgh one, to try and get into the top 10 to get a higher tier center and be in contention earlier.

To me Lundell and Byfield are the only centers worth trading up for in this year's draft. No way MN has enough to get into a lottery spot so Byfield is out. So id Lundell say drops to 8th maybe MN has something to make a trade for him. I don't think fans Wild will like the cost of that though.
