Why would the Habs help the Avs get better while getting very little value back the 3 best players, two best prospects and all of the picks go to the Avs and Sabres. Easy NO from Montreal. IF you make this kind of trade Eichel to the Habs makes sense. you would have to make the following subs. Domi, Byram, Habs, 2021 1st, Habs, 2020 & 2021 2nd to Buffalo, Avs get Petry resigned at 5.5 x 5 years, Poehling and Hawks 2020 2nd, Habs get Eichel and Graves.
Honestly, I'm a little baffled as to why Habs fans feel they are getting shafted here. There is a valid argument that Kadri is a better player than Domi. Plus the team gets a defenseman, which is reportedly what they were looking for when Bergevin was in Colorado attending Avs games for like a week.
You say the best players go to the Avs and Sabres. That's true, but those two teams are also giving up the best players/prospects. Montreal basically gives up Domi for another version of him who is a better goal scorer and defender and then gives up a second for a solid defenseman. The Kamenev/Poehling is mostly a fresh start for both guys, who are buried on the depth chart. You can leave that out altogether if you want.
I would have loved to just leave out Montreal altogether and send the package to Buffalo, but it's a good bet that the Sabres would be on Kadri's ten team no trade list (they are on everyone's, right?), so I had to find a third team. The connection mentioned above made the Habs an obvious choice. To me, the only team that gets worse is Buffalo, but they also get two young and good players, two picks, and one of the best prospects in hockey. What the Avs get is obvious, and the Habs get better by replacing Domi rather seamlessly and also getting a defenseman that brings a new element. Not saying everyone should love it, but I think I'm in the ballpark of fairness all around.
Either way, I do enjoy the discussion. BTW, there is no chance the Avs give up Byram unless it's for a star forward like Eichel, Barkov, or similar. Petry and Poehling don't get anywhere close.
