That Tanev contract would lead to the team losing Fred and Rielly so don't know if its worth it as its an overpay anyways

I say: Give Tanev a much lower offer, and try to entice him (front loaded payment, opportunity to play at home). If he accepts, great. If not, at least we've tried.

I really like this post and Sam Bennett and Tanev and think these moves make some sense.

Thank you for finally giving Tanev to Toronto some love. I think he would be a great fit with this team and was actually about to make an AGM with this and a little rant about why so many fans want to lose assets acquiring Connor Murphy, David Savard, etc. when they can save that for other areas of improvement and sign a guy for just money. Clearly, the cap needs some re-working, and I am not sure I agree with your deals, but I do like the Tanev signing so kudos to you. I think a close contract comp for him will be Muzzin's new contract, so expect something like a 4-5 year deal at $5.5 million, wherever Tanev ends up.

Bennett isn't offensive enough to be a regular 3C or move up in case of injury to Tavares or Matthews. In this scenario Bennett and Tanev cost 7.125 in cap. Leafs are much better off having Kerfoot and Engval at 4.75. and then the Leafs have 2.35 to add another player.
Sandin and Liljegren have to given the opportunity to be Leafs,

I like Tanev but he isn't a long term option. Committing to him limits the dollars you have to sign Rielly and potentially Sandin and Liljegren when the time comes. The Leafs just can't afford to sign a UFA for a longer than1 or 2 year term. This "get a RHD at all costs" is a) silly b) totally overblown due to Babcock's insistence that you needed a RH/LH split and c) fan angst from those who believe what they see on here and read in the media without thinking about anything.

Value wise, the trade is bad for Toronto, but for need wise, I would love Bennett to play for the Leafs. He brings in something Kerfoot cannot do.
