So screwed, they have a young and improving roster loaded with talent across all positions and are against the cap without having any dead cap due to terrible contracts. That is just the worst scenario. They would be so much better off had they locked up a bunch of old players on huge contracts with term because they did some stuff in their prime that they no longer can do.

Not that screwed. They just need to move 1 of the middle 6, 3 mil aav players. Thats a pretty easy fix with ~2 mil in extra cap space for anything that doesnt go as planned.

"Pretty screwed if you ask me.

Other teams are in worse cap trouble that the Leafs. Teams that can't sign their own RFAs without cutting their roster. And next year other teams will have join the cap strapped. As PleaseBanMe illustrated, and least the Leafs have their important guys signed, and do have players they can trade if need be.

You are never in cap hell until you are up against it and need to move a bad contract to sign an important piece. TO doesn't have the problem and I don't see one coming down the road either. Which is why I really am against obtaining a 30 year old FA defenceman for 5+ for 4-6 years. That will 100% be a problem down the road. Just keep on with the path we are on until its clear it won't work but currently there is a lot of youth that still needs seasoning. Let that happen and see where we are after next season.

I'm one that really doubts due to Covid we are going to have an NHL post season this year and maybe not even an NHL season next year. Gotta think the NHL is going to lose so much revenue even if the season opens, we are going to have to a change in the cap is done. I see big wage cuts across the board.

That is a distinct possibility for sure. Which doesn't hurt TO in the slightest. If there is a CBO with that scenario, it even helps TO since they can use their financial might to take on a bad contract simply to buyout. I'd imagine Florida would like to get out from under that Bob Contract. Or Calgary and Lucic. Lou has about 4 contracts he should jettison if he was at all understanding how players age these days.

Yes. We move out Johnsson or Kerfoot. Problem solved.

Tampa can't even move any of the players they'd want to out because they all have NTC.

I see Johnsson waiving hit ntc as many teams can use him as a 2nd line center. Killorn as well. Gourde is gonna be a challange along with Palat.

The NYI also have a pretty terrible cap situation and several teams have to prepare for the season after next. ex. Vancouver with Hughes and Pettersson coming of ELCs.

Then you don't understand anything about how the cap works. The Islanders are terrible, Vancouver has major issues ahead. There are several teams with major cap allocated to players who are either, heavily overpaid and leaving their prime, getting big money for what they did in their prime or just terrible contracts in general. Cap hell happens when you have very good players you can't afford to keep because you have money tied up with guys who can't pull their weight. TO has zero of those. Every single player on their roster can be moved without any difficulty. Tampa doesn't have that situation. The Islanders have about 7 guys on their roster who make way more than they should and would be nearly impossible to move. Or will soon become impossible to move. That is cap hell. The Leafs are fine, they have too much talent to keep some depth guys but enough cheaper talent to replace the ones they may need to move. That's a good problem to have.

yea after looking around i'd say islanders are ahead of toronto. tampa and toronto are in the same boat, too much money but movable assets.

All good teams will be near the cap, that is what happens when you have good players in a cap world. The biggest problem facing any team is lacking flexibility. Tampa will have a heck of a time fitting everyone next season, TO will have to move one of their capable and good middle 6 wingers or Kerfoot. All have value and are on team friendly deals. That isn't hard to move, many teams could use offense and TO has that in spades.
