Simple Effective Trades

Description
Ideas are simple yet effective.

First trade is Kerfoot and Dermott going to the Panthers for Wallmark and Weegar. With the rumored 10mill cuts Florida will need cheap good players to stay competitive. This trade allows for Florida to acquire a better center and cheaper defense man who can become a top 4 with them.

The second trade is moving Johnsson to San Jose for picks. Johnsson should do well there as he can play well with star centers. He can also play on either pp and can occasionally pk.

The final trade is moving Bracco for Mckeown. With Carolina's defensive depth, Mckeown has little to no chance to join the main roster. This trade gives him a chance to show he can be an NHL RHD. Also in the trade is a 3rd for Eetuu. Similar to the situation with Mckeown, Eetu also has a narrow window as Carolina has 7 prospect goalies and from reports they seem key on Kochetkov being the future starter with Lafontaine or Nedekjkovic as the future backups

As for who we protect for seattle.

Tavares
Matthews
Marner
Nylander
Wallmark
Mikheyev
Kapanen
(Hyman resigns after to keep him safe)

Rielly
Muzzin
Weegar

Campbell
(If Anderson decides to re sign do it after like Hyman)

Now u might be thinking Holl exposed. Heres the thing. There will be better defenseman out there to snag, plus to avoid this, Dubas will make a deal to send give them our 2021 4th to take engvall or throw in Duzak as well.

Were not giving up Dermott as he is a diamond in the rough. The kid is going to be a big time star defenseman in the future.

Wouldnt say big time star but Muzzins heir apparent, between Muzzin and Rielly potentially leaving in the next few years, our left side could be depleted pretty quickly, wouldn't mind holding onto Dermott

Dermott is a player we can move with little worry due to sandin and in general the leafs LD depth is deep so there is always the chance another Dermott will happen. In general our issue is RHD depth and sure we lose Dermott but we gain a RHD who has proven he can play against the best

Dermott out of all our defense man is the one most likely to go. It's sad but if u look at our system and future outlooks it's hard to keep him. Rielly and muzzin will be with us till they retire and sandin is NHL ready which for LD Dermott that is not good. Holl and liligren and lehtonen will play on the right in the future leaving Dermott with no space. So while it would suck to see him go this trade gets good value and gets a solid partner for rielly. In general the leafs LD is deep and who knows kokkonen could become the new dermott in a few years

Dermott is not horrible, but not great either. The thing with him is that he is clearly behind Muzzin and Rielly and probably also behind Lehtonen. And I really like Sandin too. So it is just that he is not really needed as a LHD

The main thing is while he has enormous potential. there is little to no room for him in the future. Sure keefe can move him to RD but I just don't see that as a long term solution. In general with our LD depth I think we can move on from dermott with little worry. As sandin, kokkonen, Filip, koster could become sucessors and future pieces in our dcore

Yep. The 3rd is expendable, and we need as many picks in the next 2 years as possible. So taking our 2022 5th is good.

If the Panthers need cheap players why wouldn't they just keep Weegar and Wallmark? They're not going to cost much more then Kerfoot and Dermott, really they might cost less even.

I think Dermott + Kerfoot would probably cost less, especially if the trade takes place after Kerfoot is paid his signing bonus. I don't think it would be huge savings, but probably in the range of $1m-$1.5m. If I were the Leafs, though, I'd consider Offer Sheeting Weegar. Florida already has $24m tied up in 4 Dmen and has significant UFA forwards coming up. Wonder if they would consider just taking the compensation and extra cap space/money.

Bingo. Dermott is a 3rd liner with potential upside to be a 2nd liner. The guy who thinks he's a diamond in the rough and a future star...well that's the first time I've seen that kind of analysis of Dermott and his play so far would for sure suggest 2nd line upside if he reaches his ceiling IMO.

Dermott does not have Arbitration rights so the panthers can spend less on him. While Weegar would cost around 3-4 mill, Dermott will cost 1-2 mill. Plus if the leafs pay kerfoots bonus thats less money the panthers have to spend on him.

Dermott has potential but with all the LD we have i just cant see him staying. Sandin will be our future LD so (Rielly, Muzzin, Sandin) that leaves the right side, but liligren is close to being NHL ready, may even crack the lineup and be paired with Muzzin. While Dermott could play RD with Rielly, just dont see that being a long term solution.

So while Dermott has upside, his place with the leafs is limited and I just cant see him being with them beyond 2021.

I agree. I can't see them moving on from Rielly and Muzzin will not be traded just after signing a new contract that also includes a NTC. And I don't think he did very well so far on the right.

I have heard this record before but not buying it. Dermott is going to be great and just needs time as a defensman to emerge. You are giving up way to early and listening to the Toronto media which knows nothing.

thats not a long term solution people dont understand. Liligren will be coming and with Holl and the quick progression of Duzak Dermott will be gone. In general he is good but would rather see him go for a proper RHD. Weegar provides that and adds toughness to the team. All in all it works.

nope it aint that. If u look at the maple leafs system the problem noticeable. With the signing of Lehtonen and other prospects in our system, dermott has become a trade asset for next season. Rielly needs a defense defenseman partner who can play big minutes. Dermott is not ready for that role and sure can play RD but he that great on his offside. Rather see him go in a package for a rhd like weegar than use him ineffectively on his offside. Rn his value is good and Dubas will capitalize on it.

In general Rielly and Muzzin will be our top pairing for a long time and Sandin will be Muzzin or Riellys eventual sucessor. Dermott's however does not have that luxury. Sure he can move to RD but with prospects like Howell and Duzak being ready in 2-3 years i see Dermott gone.
