Third over all is a mixed bag historically: Who would you rather?

William Nylander or

Drouin
Galchenyuk
Gudbranson
Huberdeau
Matt Duchene
Bogosian
Turris
Toews
Jack Johnson
Can Barker
Nathan Horton
Boumeester

I wasn't commenting on the trade, just correcting the record (and not criticising @cgy_flame_fan in the slightest -- we've all made much, much worse slips-of-the-fingers). Personally, if I were Ottawa, I'd take that trade; I'd have to have a solid reason to make it if I were Toronto (like needing to make room for Pietrangelo).

I'd rather have a 3rd overall pick and see what comes of that.

Quite conveniently you left out players such as Draisaitl and Heiskanen of that list.

Wasn't conviently, just listed the names on a quick google search, there is a possibility of another Dria or Hieskanen but a much greater possiblity of another Bogosian or Gudbranson, like I said mixed bag - if your Ottawa and an offer like this comes up they know what Nylander is at the moment and requires no development time

Note than OTT is unlikely to reach the contending status during the time Nylander's under that contract. And knowing Melnyk he's not paying what is due to keep the guy.

They'd be much better off just keeping that pick and taking Byfield or Stutzle and raising him to be the face of the franchise for years to come.

Highest of the picks I'd consider moving for Nylander is the 7th one from NJ. They're loaded with prospects, and are lacking in actual quality...Nylander would help in there quite much.

Terrible trade for Toronto. Doesn't make them a better team now, Nylander is an excellent top-6 forward. Pietrangelo is good but paying him 9 million is going to sink them. If they want to shop in the UFA market, they should be looking at second tier guys like Tanev, Demelo or Hamonic.

No reason to trade Holl or sign Kovalchuk. Holl is a good pair with Muzzin to take on tough matchups. Having Holl and one of the other guys above helps the D overall more then signing Pietrangelo does. Especially if you can keep Dermott and roll out:

Muzzin-Holl
Rielly-UFA
Sandin-Dermott
