Leafreniere small chance

Created by: Gordon_Bombay
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 1, 2020
Published: Aug. 1, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think this would be a perfect scenario for the Leafs. I could see the Stars really being interested in parting ways with Pavelski, while he could reestablish himself on the side of Tavares. In one year, they would probably need to trade him due to the contract of Heiskanen.

I think the Leafs would be a much better team like that and would have one of the top 3 young Ds in the NHL with Heiskanen

I agree not sure I'd give up a 3rd to get a healthy Johnsson.

I agree it's close but a good young defenseman has more value than a good young winger.

I don't disagree with you. What do you think the Leafs would need to add pick wise?

I think Dallas could use some help up front, as only Seguin is producing good numbers on that team, as well as getting rid of Pavelskis contract would not hurt them either.

And while Heiskanen would be a huge loss for them, they would still have 3 very solid Ds and Dermott can still become a top 4 D in the NHL.

I think the Leafs paying more would be stupid but I don't think Dallas does the deal

So a healthy 40-50 point 25 year old on a solid deal isnt worth a 3rd? Alright

The thing is that you have to consider what 2nd round pick that is going to be. It would not be Detroits 2nd round pick at 32nd overall, but one that will probably be around 50-53 overall. A player drafted at that position has around a 20% chance of playing 200 NHL games. I think if you trade for Johnsson, chances are very high that he will play more than 200 NHL games for your team.

I don't think a pick like that is crazy.

We should not forget that only one of Detroits forwards would be a part of the top 6 in Toronto

Johnsson isn't getting you a 2nd, You'd be lucky to get a 3rd for him right now. Coming off a major injury.

He is on the ice already. Should the Leafs make it pass Columbus, he is going to play.

And in terms of production, he is actually very close to Bertuzzi

His best season is 43 points Bertuzzi has 47 and 48 points respectively on a shortened season, Hardly call him comparable to Bertuzzi.

When did he have 50 points? He had 20 goals and 43 points in 2018-19. This season if he didn't blow out his knee he would have around 13 goals and 35 points. That's while playing on one of the best offenses if not the best in the league. I'm not sure he will hit 20 again if he stays in Toronto and in Detroit I don't see him even getting 10 goals in a season. I'm sorry but a 2nd rd pick is really steep for a guy coming off of major knee surgery, with one good season and a $3.4M cap hit. In my opinion that is just way too much uncertainty for Detroit (who is rebuilding) to use even a 3rd rd pick to acquire Johnsson.

Johnsson was also on a pace for a 42 point season this year. He is not quite as good as Bertuzzi, but not far off. As you can also, tell by the point total, the gap is not huge. it is around 5-10 points on full seasons. Bertuzzi is given top line minutes, 1st Powerplay minutes. If Bertzzi would be on the Leafs, he would play on the 3rd line too.

Being in one of the better offenses in the NHL also means that you are given less ice time if your name is not Tavares, Matthews, Marner or Nylander. Johnsson played with those guys at times, but he played 13 minutes and 40 seconds a game when he was reaching 43 points, while getting second PP time at best. He would probably get around 16-18 minutes in Detroit.

It's not that crazy but it's too much risk for Detroit and since they are rebuilding they just can't afford to take risks like that. Johnsson is coming off of major knee surgery, with one good season and a $3.4M cap hit. Maybe a playoff team would give up a 2nd for Johnsson.

You always have to put things in context. Larkin would be the nr. 3 centre in Toronto. Bertuzzi would would be on the 3rd line in Toronto and Mantha would probably be a second line winger in Toronto

I get that. but I think you still have to compete a bit, even in a rebuild. And I think we had this discussion before. This season, Detroit was just not an NHL team. The gap between them and the other bad teams was huge. This Detroit team was the worst team in the NHL in 20 years. So I think rebuilding is is good, but you should also be in the hunt for the 30th spot and there should be a competition for young guys to make the team.

It also means he isn't going up against the other teams best defensive unit or 2nd best uint for that matter.
