I'm very confused right now with Leafs forums. Why do we want to trade Marner so bad?
He was on pace for 93 points in an 82 game season.
Last year he was 90+ and our leading scorer
He can play top PP and PK and top line minutes
He is fast, the best passer on the team and makes players around him better
He might be overpayed by 1-1.5 million but you have to pay your superstars. Any deal involving Marner is a loss, not just in the lineup but in the locker room and with team moral. He's 23 and only getting better
So please stop trying to trade any of the big 4, they're not going anywhere atm
i hate to break this news to you but your defense sucks. absolutely atrocious. so to answer your question, marner is being traded to improve that god awful defense.
Exactly. No one wanted to trade kucherov when TB got swept, it makes no sense to me. Unless they can get equal or better value for marner trading him isnt the smart move.

Sorry is this coming from a fan who hasn't seen a playoff race let alone a playoff series since 2010-2011. Also you do not trade Marner and expect your team to get better. Have fun when Eichel leaves middle of next season
Its a process of elimination.
Leafs spent too much on offense and not enough on defense.
Cant move Mathews, he is your best player.
Cant move Nylander, his cap hit is affordable for his production.
Cant move Tavares, has a NMC.
That leaves Marner, as moving him (just one piece) frees up 11mil and nets you a better return than what Nylander fetches.

Why do you need to trade any of them. Look at Tampa. When they were swept everybody said trade the team. They didn't. Trading your best players never works. Marner is getting paid, sure but again he is your second leading scorer, if you trade him your team gets worse

I want to see it strictly for his old man's reaction. Paul Marner is the definition of a nightmare hockey dad who lives his dream through his son.

Because Stammer and Kuch only account for 18 million where as Marner and any combination of JT and Matthews account for 21+. If you play your cards right that extra 3 mil can net you a valuable depth piece- one the Leafs do not have on the back end.
I don't think there is any denying that Marner, though still productive, has not been quite the same since signing his new deal. However, I agree with you that trading him doesn't really make much sense at this point.
Lol just saying once you have good players you realize trading them is not good, you will learn one day
buddy i'm kidding that comment didn't hurt my feelings...i'm so numb to those comments you could literally say anything bad about the sabres and i won't feel a thing...i wasn't trying to be rude or anything in my first comment i'm just trying to say that moving marner would be a good idea if you got an insanely talented defenseman back. you don't have to trade him! it was just an idea!! i didn't mean to get aggressive sorry!!!

Thats a trash comparison.
1) TBL doesnt have 40mil tied up in their top 4 F
2) TBL has a much much stronger D than TOR
3) TBL consistently outperformed TOR in regular season
TBL is overall built substantially better than TOR hence why blowing it up, wouldve been a crazy overreaction (which is why they didnt do it).
TOR on the otherhand continues to slap rosters together with a trash D core and are surprised every June that it didnt work

Basically my thoughts.
However, I am also perfectly fine with the team moving either Matthews or Nylander (Tavares with the NMC decides his fate, although sooner or later he might want off this sinking ship).
Winning should be the priority. Not keeping 4 players who put themselves before the team when it came to contract negotiations.
If the keep the big-4 they are a bubble team for the next 4 or 5 years.

There are a select few Dmen (I'm assuming that any hypothetical Marner trade is for a Dman) that I would consider trading Marner for, and I don't think any of the teams who posses those players would trade them away.
Edit: Don't know why I quoted my own post, I meant to edit it lol

I know it didn't hurt you, we get the same comments every year.

But is trading Marner the best option. You don't trade your best players and expect to get better

really want the maple leafs to reach the second round so i too can be this mouthy.
therefore, i believe we should trade mitch marner to spare parts. thank you mr avalanche fan.

i dont get why its so hard for you to understand this.
The purpose of moving Marner is strengthen your D core.
You are getting better by strengthening your D

But really, though, what team that has a Dman that would be enough to get the Leafs to move Marner would be willing to move said Dman? Star for star trades rarely happen in the NHL. I'm not completely opposed to the idea or theory of trading Marner, I just don't see a realistic scenario where trading him would be worth it.

I don't understand why your struggling to understand that the dmen ppl are making trades for on capfriendly are either sh*t or are unproven. You do not trade Marner unless it wows you, and so far it is hard to be wowed by an offer for him

great question...you're not getting a hamilton or josi but you MAY be able to get a jones or provorov (both of those are still INSANELY unlikely). i don't see a realistic scenario either. the main reason? that marner cap hit. no team is willing to take that on.
