All I can think is that if I'm ownership, trading Staal when the roster has shown to be competitive enough to be in the mix for postseason hockey is going to be a tough sell.
You finally just got Kaprizov to come over, and Strome might cover the bet as a quality #2C (I'm taking the under on this personally). If Kahkonen proves to be an upgrade to Dubnyk, this roster is comfortably competing with Nashville for the #3 spot in the Central.
Nor do I think that deal does Toronto any favour, the cap savings are minimal.
Let's assume Minnesota adds either Gunler at #15 or Foerster at #24 based on where Pittsburgh lands, and Barron with the second round pick (someone always slides) to a prospect group already featuring the freshly drafted Lundell, Boldy, Khovanov, and Warren. Nevermind that you've added Bellows for essentially free. The basis for long-term success is here, especially that Kaprizov is in the fold. I think the talk of an all-out rebuild needs to be extinguished in Minnesota. Remaining competitive until the prospects are capable of taking over, not just graduating, is going to be key in keeping Minnesota a prime contender in the Central for the next decade+.
