Why would Leafs want a player that is 10 years older than the one they are trading? For what? Because he is RHD? Cmon..

I like Zach Aston Reese but I wouldn't give up Nylander for him

      I would do
      Pettersson for Nylander

Ottawa’s gonna need more to take JJ’s deal, McCann and a 3 round pick downgrade ain’t it (take JJ out and you might consider it a fair deal even, you’re gonna have to pay to dump that contract though). I also think a 2nd is VERY optimistic for Hornqvist at this point

Because the point of the NHL is to win the Stanley Cup, not ice the youngest roster possible.

Defenseman who is declining would not help you win a stanley cup.

I mean, I'll take an overripe avocado that might rot in a week over a fresh turd...

Letang unquestionably helps Toronto in the short-term. He fills a gigantic need and is still a #1 defenseman. He is on a great contract that will expire well before he's going to hit any decline. That's the kind of trade a contending team does...they strike while the iron is hot, and focus on NOW vs. the future. Trading Nylander would be trading from a position of absurd strength to fill a weakness.

If you want a stud RHD in his prime, signed to a great contract, he won't even be available. Toronto is going to have to compromise on age, contract, or talent, and even then the price will not be tiny.

There would be defensemen on the market that would be younger, with better contract and better at actual defense than Kris Letang from what Ive heard. I would like Letang on Leafs. Not for Nylander though. Too much risk.

Buffalo wouldn’t take that trade if it were for seventh round pick.

I get that it is in style to hate on Letang these days but some of you have some serious recency bias going on, Letang would join the leafs and be the best defenceman there. He offers more offensive production than any of the defenceman the Leafs have and I understand that he gets injured but so do all of the high end d-men on the leafs roster. Sure he isn't the top defensive defenceman in the league but is he significantly worse than Rielly/Muzzin/Barrie? IMO he isn't. He is the type of defencemen that the Leafs have been trying to acquire with this core, and even if the Leafs want to get younger/cheaper then they also receive a 2nd round pick.
