Now that Kapenan is gone

Created by: aadoyle
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 25, 2020
Published: Aug. 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just an idea.

I like Braun as he basically is what Braiden Schneider could become. When healthy he is very good defensively especially on the penalty kill

Kapenan is gone so to add some toughness brought in Brian Boyle. I liked him and he needs to come back and score some goals and do what he does best.

If not Braun Gudas or Demelo will also be fine.

As for the cap space seattle takes Holl or Dermott Sandin and Liligren come up, and Hyman takes a team friendly deal. Freddie is gone and Allen or Rantaa comes in

Just for Fun season prediction with 82 season

Issue was Johnsson was injured this year twice, missed a good chunk of the season and has been labelled injury prone. Plus away from matthews his numbers weren't good. Really hurt his value

Before i would have said a 2nd now this is probs the best they could hope for

Johnsson isn't better than Kapanen. If anything they're even when he's healthy

Schneider has not played a game in the NHL yet and I would argue based on what I saw in him in the WHL this season, he is already a better overall player than Justin Braun, who is not really a great player by the way. Obviously some growing pains with a rookie, but Schneider is already a good skater, better than Braun I'd say, his IQ is better, he is excellent at positioning, gritty (maybe not as rough or gritty as Braun yet) and has a wicked point shot, something that Braun either doesn't possess, or is not often on display. Either way, he's a good young kid, Braden and reminds me a lot of Jakob Chychrun, who by the way, after being drafted 16th overall, went straight to the NHL.

yeah i believe this is the best for his value. Maybe Dubas can get a 2nd for him but with him being labelled injury prone im not sure.

Scouts said schneider was a good comparable rn to Braun. Things could change and he could become a player like Hamilton once his offense improves

man if he could get 7 goals and 25 assists his first season i would be happy

Everyone is going to give you a different take, especially when it comes to prospects. If you want an honest comp though, I am telling you it's much more Jakob Chychrun then it ever is Justin Braun.

I honestly can't believe Kapanen returned as much as he did for the Leafs. He essentially got as much, arguably more than, what Zucker returned for us, and Zucker had a 30 goal season under his belt.

Yeah for sure. It would have to be a second rounder, or if not Toronto would probably have to send a late pick back as well. Anyway, like I said, this looks good as is, so I agree.

I was (and still am) a big booster of Kapanen and his trade value, but yeah, when I got home and saw this trade I was pretty speechless.

And Hallander + Rodriguez (okay depth piece if they can sign him for cheap). I like it. Probably wouldn't take Schneider at 15 though.

Rodrigues i have a feeling is gone. 2mill is the QA and thats a bit to much. But if Dubas can bring him back for 1 sure.

Contract ending RFA vs. UFA....understand the difference worth value now.

I don't think he sticks around either, but Dubas did mention in his presser that it was important to him to have Rodriguez in the deal to maintain their depth... Probably just words but you never know.

so what u think of my idea

I think it works well

Braun when healthy is very good defensively and is especially good on the PK something we need to improve

i could see dubas moving him and a low pick for a higher pick or something. So rod and a 5th for a 4th or something

Johnsson was worth more to the Leafs which is why they gave him 200k more on his contract (both contracts were signed on the same day)
Both players are solid but Johnnson is better. He was just injured this season, so people forget how good he was last season, perfect example of recency bias. When fully healthy, Johnsson is easily a top 6 forward while Kapanen is a middle 6 forward

A trade for a top 4 Dmen (Nylander trade bait) and a UFA top 4 dmen (unless Lehtonen is a real deal) and move on from Holl would be great. Letting Rodrigues walk away would be ok too.

Again when signing contracts for value...RFA and UFA ending matters...it's called buying up UFA seasons, which cost more money.

Braun can at least move pucks at an NHL level, Schneider it's a dice roll whether his forwards can win the race or not
