What do we do at 2C

Created by: redwingsfan04
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 3, 2020
Published: Sep. 3, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So obviously the Red Wings are still going to be bad next year but we still need to fill in some holes unless we want to be more of a joke than we were last year. One of the holes that sticks out to me is 2C. AA filled that role for most of last season but he was traded away. That leaves us with Filppula as our 2nd best centre on the roster. I doubt that any free agents that would be good enough to fill that role would be willing to sign in Detroit so that would force us to explore the trade market. Obviously we aren't going to break the bank since we're still bad but who are some realistic targets that we could get for maybe a late 2nd or 3rd? Especially guys that would have their value diminished by being on a bad contract, cap-strapped team, coming of a bad year, etc.

Note: Don't comment on the team because I didn't do anything with it.

Edit: Also, trading Mantha for Domi is NOT the answer

I've read somewhere that Fabbri has been pushing a lot to be a center during his contract negociations

With the flat cap, I could see someone like Haula signing in Detroit on a 1 year deal with the understanding he'll be flipped at the deadline to a contender if he produces. Good way to get his career back on track after a down year and smart for Detroit to add more futures.

I've seen that too. Even then, I'd like some insurance in case that doesn't work out and we'd still need another guy that could take Fabbri's spot then.

Acquire more assets along with Turris and play him at 2C?
Or offer sheet Cirelli? That’d be sweet

Turris would be an option although his 4 years remaining could be an issue.

I love the thought of getting Cirelli but I don't think it's possible without giving up a core piece or 4OA so I don't see it happening

Outside of Yzerman making a bold move for someone like Cirelli, I think they'll just see what Veleno and Ras can do with the opportunity to battle for 2C spot. I don't see them bringing in an older, more expensive guy who'll clog up the roster and possibly be a contract burden in the future. If a guy like Nick Suzuki can step in from junior and be good for Montreal in the playoffs, there's no reason the Wings can't get something similar out Veleno, the talent gap between them isn't significant. Leafs playing 18 year old Nick Robertson in playoffs, there's lots of young guys of similar value to Veleno, Ras, etc getting called up on much better teams. Wings need to stop babying their young guys and see what they got

An offer sheet is an offer sheet ... right? If the player accepts and the other team doesn't match, you give up high draft picks, not core players.
