Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 10, 2020
Published: Sep. 10, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Obviously many unknowns being banked on. Main assumptions:

Woll (25) appears to be ready for the starting job, but needs a solid backup in case. Enter Raanta (34).

Leafs draft Dylan Holloway at #15, and he is ready to step in at 3C 3 years after his draft year (seems reasonable).

A year off of Liljegren's contract is not burned in 2020-21 (safe to say that's likely true).

Carter, Giordano and Bozak want to come for cheap as they get old - Bozak for the Leafs connection as he spent his entire career here basically, and Carter is a London Ontario kid. Giordano is from Toronto.

Subban continues his rapid decline and, at 34, decides to sign cheap and come home.

Lastly, it banks on the continued development of the kids - Robertson, Sandin, Liljegren, Hallander, Abramov continue on their current path.

The Leafs would continue to trade out-priced players for picks. Its likely that at some point they'd find a nice draft steal or two that would also be ready to make the team, but I'll assume not for now I guess because I don't know who that would be.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. 2022 1st round pick (NJD)
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
NJD continues to get better, and after a 2022 playoff run ending in the first/second round, it is clear that they need an upgrade on LD, and need more veteran presence. Enter Muzzin.
2.
TOR
  1. 2021 1st round pick (COL)
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (COL)
  3. 2022 3rd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
After a great rebound from his injury plagued 2019-20 season, Johnsson scores 20+ goals and 50+ points in 2020-21. In 2020-21, Avalanche make another cup run, ending in the CF/SCF, and want an upgrade on scoring. They move a late 1st in a weak draft, and two third rounders as it is now clear that Johnsson is a top 6 F.
3.
TOR
  1. 2022 2nd round pick (BUF)
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Kerfoot proves to be a great 3C in 2020-21 and 21-22, but with Hallander and Holloway ready there is no need for him. Buffalo has a great tandem in Eichel - Cozens, but Mittlestadt never pans out. The team is playoff bound at the 21-22 deadline, and wants to pick up an upgrade at 3C.
4.

Sabres decline

Sabres would do it for the 2nd. That's it.

I like the story-telling method of outlining the trades. One of the more enjoyable ACGM posts I have seen in a while.

Things that stuck out
1. Muzzin and Holl both have NTC. Assuming they waive.
2. 2021 is a very good draft, especially for last 1st round
3. How does the story end?

If that's what he's worth then fine. Just thinking that quality 3C rentals can go for that much depending on the market at the deadline

I mean there were just so many hypothetical parts moving I felt that I should explain what I think would have happened in between now and then. Hopefully it ends in a cup lol

leafs dont need Holloway rn in our system for future centers we got (Halliner/SDA/Abramov/Abruzzese). If Dubas keeps the pick Schneider/Askarov/Barron will be the targets.

Indeed.

"[Avalanche] want an upgrade on scoring. They move a late 1st in a weak draft, and two third rounders as it is now clear that Johnsson is a top 6 F." tears of joy

Absurd.

There are a million versions of Johnsson in UFA and who are not coming off an injury. Sure lets give up a top pick and 2 3rd rounders are well for a guy avs easily can find for free with less health risk. Exhibit A, Avs sign Mikael Granlund..done without having to give up 3 draft picks

36. He'll be 28 when he needs a new deal (in 2 years), and is born in march, so he'll be just barely 36 when the last season ends. But offensive defensemen usually age pretty well. Not ideal but someone else will offer it if we don't and Rielly is very important to this team
