Description

This would be absolutely devastating but also maybe the best case scenario if we actually have to move someone from the core. Nelson would garner a lot of interest on the trade market and we'd probably be able to clear all or most of his salary. Thankfully, center depth has become a strength for this team and I think we'd survive in the long-run, although it would be definitely take a hit next season.

I'd say only do this in case of a $10 million offer sheet for Barzal. I'm still a big believer in the Boychuk dump to a team like Anaheim, Dallas or New Jersey, but you never know how that is going to work in a flat cap world.

That said, this would absolutely break my heart :(

Additional Details:

What might a fair return for Nelson be and to who? Would have to be prospects/picks ideally. He's an ideal 2C, so many offensive tools. Winnipeg seems like the perfect fit.

I think you move bailey instead. There will be multiple teams interested - the guy is on a fair contract and is a point per game player in the playoffs

He's an option as well, although if you want to maximize your return, Nelson could be the way to go. I think we're stronger at C than on the wings too.

Neither are fun options to think about

I would move cizikas or bailey instead. Nelson is so underrated and hes providing excess value on his contract right now. Also has the best shot on the team, I get that he’s get the biggest return , it’s not worth it IMO.

Half the league would be interested in cizikas

I don't think so.

The Bjugstad trade pretty much proved that cap dump trades won't be happening in a normal way.

Teams just don't have the money to take in bigger contracts by default.

Normally Leddy might bring you a 3rd. But now I think you'll need to at least retain some salary to gain that 6th you're getting from Komarov.

And no one is taking Komarov without actually getting paid to do it...

Ofc not. It's just that teams don't have money to do moves reguralry. WPG is also long-term cap strapped.

He certainly won't have his usual market value as a result of the current cap situation, his value isn't negative, but it has reduced as the result of the impending couple of years of cap hell.

I can't see Detroit taking that. In a world where cap space is at a premium, I think they can get a much better return for $5.5 Million especially since a 29 year old defenseman wouldn't help a rebuild for when Detroit is ready to compete again.

to keep Barzal and Pulock in the fold.

I still think Bailey would be a better option, especially if he's projected to play that low in the lineup.

Also, I don't think Toews gets that much, I think he gets a bridge at 2y 2.5M

No one is taking that Komarov deal. Unless s team gets a first and more, that gm should be fired on the spot.

Had that one set up as a Melker Karlsson replacement for them. Most numbers I've seen actually rate him higher both offensively and defensively than Karlsson. He's been very good in the playoffs for the Isles. I think in a defensive role, he could be a really serviceable bottom-sixer. Doesn't necessarily have to be San Jose, but they've got more space than most this offseason and are pretty shallow on the wings. But anywhere we could send him for a low pick or whatever-prospect at 33% or even 50% retention works for me.

Letting Melker walk is one of the best things Doug WIlson can do this summer. An older, more expensive Melker type is not what we need going forward. We have prospects/young guys like True and Blichfeld ready to step into that role in the bottom six with much more upside and on ELC's.

He was great at PK, but on a team with no forward depth, you can't have bottom sixers whose only good quality is the PK.

We had the best PK this season, it could stand to be a little worse if the replacement can put the puck in the net a little more. Noesen is the most reasonable thought to replace. I think True will step up and take Melker's PK duties, maybe split with Kellman. Gambrell could stand to adapt some PK skills to his game if he expects to stay in the NHL, if not he is doomed to the AHL for a long time, he can't survive on his skill alone.

When Goody departed the best PKer became Couture. Melker didn't seem to raise his game much whether that's the ceiling of his ability or he had just given up ( I think a lot of Sharks just threw in the towel tbh)
