Second Try

Created by: Elwood
Team: 2020-21 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 13, 2020
Published: Sep. 13, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Second try - would love some feedback from Calgary and Philly fans.

In general, I think the Bruins need to try for more secondary scoring (Dadanov) and to rebuild the left side (Hanifin and Ghost). I love Grz, but can't see him playing top pair minutes. Hate losing him and Kase, but have t give some value to get some in return.

Calgary would likely rather keep Hanifin. Calgary is losing the majority of its defensive line up this season with hamonic, brody, gustaffson, forbort and stone all in free agency. Hanifin has been a solid second pairing defense man for us and it really wouldnt make sense to trade him unless we are receiving a substantial upgrade at forward in return.

grzelcyk is a 3rd pairing defenseman in calgary and Kase is a third line forward who is very injury prone in his relatively short career so far. i think boston would have to atleast add a 2nd or possibly a 1st round pick to make the above trade work.

Calgary would be much more interested in trading a defenseman if the trade included DeBrusk but i seriously doubt boston would be interested

You are light on both of your trades for the Dmen. You're giving up a 40pt winger, a #6 defenseman, a nothing prospect, and a 3rd round pick for half of your top 2 pairs (with salary retained). Both guys are signed for 3 more seasons with a reasonable cap hit, I can't imagine that works for either the Flames or the Flyers.

That's a fair view. I'd counter that Grz isn't a 6 dman, he's a solid 4 with potential to be a 3. As for Ghost, I'm interested in your view of him going forward, because the stats and the contract are inching towards cap dump territory... I just think he needs to be in a better set up for him to be valuable....

Grizz graded out as borderline 1st pair d man last season. I am not as high on Grizz as most B’s fans but a #6 is ridiculous assesment. That being said Flames decline.

Ghost is garbage. I would not give up much more than Zboril for him. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This season was poor, but that he started the year with a knee injury and looked a step slow (which is a killer for a guy like him). He had a second procedure during the pause and he regained his explosiveness and lateral movement. I was blown away that AV wouldnt put him into the lineup despite looking dynamic every opportunity he got (in camp, the round robin, and limited playoff games). That is more a knock on the coaching staff than the player though. We were insistent on icing Nate Thompson despite terrible results while we benched players like Laughton (who skated at 1C a few games later) and JVR (forcing us to use Derek Grant on the PP), so there is plenty of evidence of questionable decisions to go around.
I believe that he will return to form next year. My ideal would have him skating with Myers in the top 4 or with Niskanen. It would not surprise me if he is moved, but he's the type of player that if he reaches half of his best, he's worth 4.5mil.

...And yes, i know other can't stand him but all offensive dmen are divisive.

Grading out as a top-pair dman playing against lesser opponents in limited ice time... He was used appropriately by the coaching staff and succeeded in his role. While he could develop, he could continue to be just a reliable NHL dman. Coupling him with an injury prone winger that is more potential than results doesn't get you a guy that moves the needle on the top pair. I agree that the Flames decline.

We definitely have different information and opinions about Ghost, but the ACGM has him in a top four role (which I think is completely reasonable). If you want a guy that can move the puck, QB the PP, and change the dynamics on the ice, it will cost more than a failed prospect.... Or I am completely wrong about Ghost. Either way, Zboril does nothing for the Flyers. How do B's fans see him? Is he expected to contribute at the NHL level?

Remember how much I wanted the Bruins to get Hanifin in the draft. Not so much now. Certainly wouldn’t give up Grzelcyk.

It opens cap space for Philly, They have been trying to dump him for 2 years. No takers. He’s terrible in his own end. PP specialist nothing else. If he’s your 3rd pair that you don’t have to rely on much 5 on 5. Ok. But his cap hit is to big for that.

Not really a fit in Boston. They need a 1st pair LD and a physical presence. He is neither.

Zboril maxes out as 3rd pair type.

If B’s were to trade for Hanifin, Grizz would not be part of the package as it is not beneficial to either team. Grizz would serve the role that Ghost is being aquired for except he’s sound defensively. If Flames wanted a d man back in the deal they’d want younger cost controlled d man like Urho or Lauzon.

I don’t see Flames in any hurry to move him. They do have Valimaki waiting but Gio not getting younger. The right deal sure. But not and underwhelming one.

Don't act like Hanifin is incredible, he's been playing for 5 years and hasn't even played like a top5 pick (top pair D) for two straight season. He's a great top4 D, but we have Grzelcyk who can play the same role+Kase who is great middle-six guy. 2 good players > 1 good player

We can agree to disagree then. Ill take the younger, and more proven player with more potential locked up on a good contract any day

Grz continues to get disrespected by other fanbases. Go looks at McAvoy's numbers with and without Grz...its night and day. Excellent undersized PMD that has a solid denfesive game. A #4 a worst, with 3 upside. Underrated wrist shot and has more offensive upside then he's shown

when the rest of the fan bases are valuing a guy below that of the home crowd it is the home crowd that needs to reevaluate not the rest of the fan bases. your always gonna see the guy as more valuable then he really is because its your team. this isnt just one opinion of the guy. the only ones valuing Grz that high are bruins fans

So people from fan bases that rarely if ever watch the guy play are better to give value on him then people who watch him game in and game out? Do you know how dumb the sounds? Especially since the talent evaluations by most fans goes....

Step one: check points
Step two: make evaluation

I will agree with you that as a fan of the player you have a better understanding of his talent beyond his points. However I hope you’ve grasped the concept of fan goggles as it is definitely impacting your judgement. GRZ is a bottom pairing defense man on 80% of the teams in the league and nobody outside of Boston will value him any higher

Lol again watch him play and look at his numbers and you'd know he's not lol. Hell in the playoffs he was split time on the top pairing playong w/ McAvoy. He's the reason Boston is willing to let their current #2LD walk in FA.

Your providing my point that you know jack about Grz, so how can you know whats hes worth?

Are you referring to grzelcyk as a number 6 d man? If so i don’t think you have seen boston play a game in 3 years.

So that’s why he’s played on the top pair a lot for one of the best teams in the league the last two years?

You don’t make a lot of sense.

If he's a top pair defenseman, why are you trading him? and why is he averaging 18 minutes a night? He was 5th among all Bruins Dmen in time on ice in both the regular season and the playoffs... so either you are under utilizing your top pair or overstating his role.
