He'd almost be like Erik Karlsson IMO, just needs to learn the defensive game a little more and He'd make tons of points I'd say

I heard a few scouts say that he could be like Quinn Hughes. I would love that but his contract would just seem like a bit much.

You had barrie who was all offense and no defense and you hated him. Why would marner be any better

Barrie was actually worse than that- great offense and actively bad defense.

Marner has great offense but is fine-to-good, certainly not a liability, in his own end as a forward. So, it's a decent bet that at least you'd be getting the offense of Barrie without his defensive liability.

I feel like when that guy tweeted - sorry, can't remember who it was making this concept - he was talking more about how there were missed opportunities earlier in some guys' development to play other positions. I.e. if Marner would've been tried as a defenseman at a young age then it might've worked out for him given his skill set; not that the Leafs should play him there now. Would be interesting to see what things would be like if youth coaches didn't corner guys into positions (or didn't use positions at all...total hockey ftw)

Lol a guy whos never played d before in his life is gonna be better than a guy whos done it his whole career. No that doesn't exactly happen.

I mean...it does?

Dustin Byfgulien, Mark Pysyk, Brent Burns, Brendan Smith....forwards go to D and back all the time. And oftentimes they're better there. It's just which team has the balls to try. And of course it would be a big gamble having Marner go there as an elite forward where those other guys were not. But their options otherwise are kinda limited.

why not trade Marner for a boat load of picks and then just sign AP as your true #1 RHD. 8x10 for AP. Same cap hit as Marner and you get an actual D-Man and a bunch of picks in the process.

It was a thought I had when he was signing his contract because with his playmaking ability it gives them a chance to play him with both top lines. I just thought it was interesting to mess around with how it would work.
