Rust is getting a Kapanen return

Created by: TheGuyInTheChair
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 22, 2020
Published: Sep. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
We aren't trading him but if Barclay Goodrow is worth a 1st, Blake Coleman is worth two firsts, and Kapanen is worth a 1st and a decent prospect than Rust is worth AT LEAST a 1st rounder. His contract is an absolute steal given his production and Coleman, Goodrow, and Kapanen haven't come close to being a point per game winger like Rust was this year, not to mention all the other things he's good at. Anyone who wants to debate this has to acknowledge the fact that players similar to Rust have been getting massive returns recently and explain why Rust should get less of a return than Goodrow, Coleman, and Kapanen.

After this season, there's no doubt about it. Still can't think of a single good reason why Pittsburgh would want to trade him, even if they are getting a 1st back

You obviously aren't too familiar with Jim Rutherford lol

And to think you could've had him for Puljujarvi at the draft last year

You are missing an important factor on why Coleman and Goodrow were sold so high and it's their very friendly team contracts along with their style of play. Rust commands 3.5 mil which isn't unreasonable but Coleman's 1.8 mil and Goodrow's 900k are absolute steals and they both have another year of term at that price.

Pittsburgh wanted Kris Russell as well and I couldn't just give him away!

I'd like to think even he can recognize the value Rust brings, especially on that contract a lot of people thought was an overpayment when it was signed lol.

But maybe I'm wrong....

Rust has two years left and was a point per game player this year. Coleman and Goodrow are not point per game players

I went on a whole diatribe in another thread about this. It was reported today by two legit Pittsburgh hockey writers that Rust is available for the right deal. He's not being shopped in any way, but teams are calling and Rutherford will move him for an "NHL ready player and a top prospect." The thing about Rutherford is when he wants something he gets total tunnel vision and for good or far bad, will make sure he gets it.

-He wanted to get tougher, he traded a young bottom-six forward + 1st for Reaves
-He wanted Kap back, he overpaid to get him.
-He wanted Brandon Tanev, he outbid himself
-He wanted Jack Johnson, he outbid himself

Now his main priority is signing a RD and he really like Tanev which has now been reported multiple times. The article also goes on to say he believes Hornqvist can step up into his spot. It's safe to say his blinders are up and he'll do whatever he can to get Tanev.

That is not their game. Coleman in general is a defensive monster and maybe the best PK player in the league. He also plays with an intensity and doesn't take too many penalties. It's hard to find 200 foot players like him. You might get a first for Rust but saying Goodrow got this and Coleman got that based on points is not wise.

That can work in his favor when he wants the right player like Kessel in 2015 but when he's wrong about a guy it really hurts the team

Rust has been on the PK here for many years and is a smart, fast, two way forward but I get your point on the salaries

he traded all those firsts and overpaid players but he gave you guys 2 cups. Who gives a f*ck if he ruined your future. I'd take a ruined future and 2 cups in exchange for a decent future and likely not as many cups

It's weird. I've seen the Pens win five cups. I was very young during the first two, but I remember them. It's been amazing to see the Sid/Geno era get three has been crazy, but it's one thing for your team's reign to come to end because your players just don't have it anymore and it's another for it to end because of poor asset management. It's frustrating to know all he needs to do is remove ONE player and make a few minor tweaks and this team is a contender again.

Most people in this thread are morons. Rust had elite numbers this year and he’s on a steal of a contract. He had 56 points in 55 games. Amazing what happens when you get power play minutes. Add JP to this trade and I think that’s the return he gets you. I love when people glorify certain players and diminish others.

I mean, Sid, Geno and Letang are declining, but their decline is still better than 90% of the league. This is still a team that has the ability to win a cup with the right support or the removal of certain players.

Someone earlier argued with me that Rust is not a top-six winger. I laughed.
