Yup pretty much. It’s typical here. People love to try and downgrade leafs players. Unless their contracts are due. Then they are full on superstars.

Exactly. They gave Mitch his money because he earned it. He will only get better from here, it’s not like Dubas paid him 11 mil when he’s declining. Also, no one could’ve predicted a flat cap. Dubas was expecting a large raise this summer.

Dubas isn’t dumb, but he isn’t perfect either. Marner is worth his money. He’s always on pace for 90-100 pts every year and ppl treat him as if his contract is worse than Eriksson or Karlsson.

Keep in mind that Leafs Nation trashed Nylander last year too because he held out and then underacheived; this year, he put up 30 goals and was worth every penny of that $6.9m contract... so the fans had to find a new whipping boy up front (along with Ceci on the blueline). When Marner breaks 100 points next year and is top 10 in league scoring, the fans will quickly be back on his bandwagon... and probably trashing whoever Dubas signs this summer!

Trading for Marner doesn’t make sense for Buffalo. The cost in assets makes them a very top-heavy theme like Toronto already is. They should not give up any of their lower-cost productive assets. At nearly $11 million a year he costs as much as a team should pay their whole 2nd line.

Winning teams get production from all four lines. If you pay half your cap to five players you’re going to have a hard time getting anyone else who will put up what you need them to.

this is exactly why I made this post. You'd be fired 47 times if you didn't accept this deal as Buffalo's GM

The salary retention makes a difference, he’s probably a $9 million player. For the simple fact of getting rid of Okposo‘s contract they probably have to take it. Olofsson is a natural goal scorer though, and Marner is a playmaker. He is only helpful if he is playing with someone who shoots the puck. Other than Skinner, without Olofsson Buffalo does not have another sniper right now. Kahun’s career high is 12 goals, playing with Marner he might score 25, but if they kept Olofsson he could score 40.
