Description
These trades are different for the most part but this is the way I would go if i was GM. Try to obtain max value for both Tatar and Danault (take back a cap dump if needed) and add to that under-23 core. I think Suzuki and KK can both be top-6 centremen, but Koivu can insulate them defensively and Claude could easily run 3 lines with even ice time. Habs have cap space to take on Nino's salary and hope he finds his scoring touch playing on the 3rd line with Koivu. Worst case, I would trade Byron for next to nothing.
Finally, I would probably draft two of Jarvis, Mercer, Amirov, or Perreault with the 15th and 16th picks.
Let me know what you think, I tried to be unbiased and account for needs

Yeah getting rid of Tatar now I think is smart. Nino has albatross deal but they can swallow it. I like the fact that they get another 1st rounder. I dont trade another hypothetical 1st rounder for Rakell with a 2nd though. i dont think Rakell is worth it.

I'm hoping they simply keep their current top pick and trade Tatar for assets, sign Domi at this point.

Look back at them for years. Yes nino had one bad year and Tatar had one good one. The fact is they normally both score at a 40-50 point pace. Why would the canes give up a top 15 pick and they top rhd prospect for one good year

Agreed its rich but Tatar is the more consistent player. He scores 50 points and 20 goals like clockwork. Nino has this up down pattern, was playing bottom 6 and Tatar would save them money.

I dont think they get a 1st rounder back. Draft is too strong. If they retain half Tatar's deal its more likely

While I'm sure that the NYR's will say that's an overpay for Danault, but if you want the Habs to win this year, we need him.
Suzuki and KK are just too young, and likely to run out of gas in a full season.
Keep in mind, the playinns/playoffs was a tiny sample size, but more importantly, the time off benefitted them massively.

I get your points although Tatar is a way better player than Nino (regular season at least). There was talk of Carolina wanting to dump Nino's contract for next to nothing... just thought they could acquire a good top-6 option at the same time! Would they prefer to get rid of Dzingle?

Despise the Rakell deal. Guy is only good for the contract. Not what the Habs need despite being a RS.

yeah, thats the thing: I don't want to win this year, nor do i think it is realistic to try to win with this roster. At some point Suzuki and KK will have to take the reins of this team and they wouldn't be the first to have success doing it (see Pettersson and Horvat in vancouver). With Koivu who can shelter them defensively while they play with the team's best wingers... i think they could really improve this year

He might be the best affordable option considering age, contract, goal-scoring... not sure that we would like the price for Laine, Ehlers, Mantha, etc...

The Habs dont need the flexibility with Rakell. Rickard is more valuable to a team that is at the cap. He just doesn't fit. Much like Eriksson fits better has an asset to a cash strapped team like Ottawa that needs to hit the floor as opposed to the Habs
