Why Evgeni Dadonov Will Join His Coach Boughner and Be a Shark

Created by: CheechYou
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 13, 2020
Published: Oct. 13, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let's look at how coveted RW free agent comparables have fared thus far in free agency:

MIKE HOFFMAN:
Unsigned (waiting on a good offer or doesn't like existing ones)

CRAIG SMITH
Contract drops from 4.25mil to 3.1mil.
27% decrease when most projections had him going between 4.5-5mil.

JESPER FAST:
Contract increases from 1.85 to 2mil
8% increase when projections had him going between 2.75-3.1mil.

TYLER TOFFOLI:
Contract decreases from 4.6mil to 4.25mil.
8% decrease when projections had him going between 5-6mil.

It's certainly not unreasonable to think that Dadonov -- older than all those guys -- would not sign at his previous 4mil especially if given the chance to play with his old coach Boughner. A decrease actually makes sense here, but makes sense given the shorter 2-year term (made to expire the same year as Hertl's extension).

And Rutta will sign to join Czech buddies Simek and Hertl. A one year deal for him at that cap hit makes a great deal of sense for both parties.

This is a playoff team, and possibly cup-contending if some players bounce back and players stay healthy.

I didn't see a single projection of Smith getting even close to that kind of contract.

Trust me when I say this. I really really really want dadnov. I think he is exactly what we need. Will it happen? No. And I think he gets a bit more than 4. At least 4.5.

MTL are over the cap, we need to trade Weal (1.4M) to make the cap work so there’s no chance we want Sorensens ( maybe if Byron gets traded )

I think he had one of the widest projections of players that I saw-- 3.5m all the way up to $5m+. Before FA, I thought he would end up with a 3 year deal around his previous contract $$ value, so I do think that he ended up signing for less than expected (at least to me).

I think it's because he's really, really good without the points to show for it. Some just predict based on points when in reality and according to some models he's worth a lot more

Even if Dadonov took between 4 and 4.5, Doug is too big of a knob to go after him.

Uhhh... not true whatsoever.

Evolving hockey had him going at 3yrs for 4.422mil. TheHockeyCode had him going for 5yrs at over 5mil.

I'm not sure what projections you're looking at, but those two are the most well-known and reputable ones.

As I showed in the description, the market's been very poor for UFAs. And it's been especially bad for older ones looking for good deals. I wouldn't even be surprised to see a GM sign him to a 3.8x3 deal. Both Toffoli (who's younger and arguably more effective as a complete player) and Smith (better analytics, same age, but without the points) got substantial decreases in deals after strong years. Given Daddy's age and the set market, a 4x2 is perfectly reasonable.

Fair enough, I've seen Habs fans bringing him there but MTL's just a placeholder. Send him to BUF/OTT/CBJ anywhere.

I think he does. He tends to oblige to a lot of the input he receives from the people under him. In this case, he'll ask Boogie "why ya want?" and Boogie will say "Daddy" and DW'll say "say no mo".

If he doesn't, and he goes into next season with our current roster as constructed thinking it's a good playoff team, then he's truly the biggest knob of all.

But something tells me he's not THAT delusional. We'll see.

Sheesh tell me about it. I hope that's not what he's thinking but you never know what's going on in that mind of his...

I hope you're right! I like this roster with discount Dadonov better than most other options. Fingers crossed.

Evolving hockey I did see, but that was far from 5-6 mil.

Term matters obviously.

Not that the deal is unrealistic. It’s in the range of possible. It’s that dougie boy thinks he has young guys to step in. And he said “I do believe” when asked for with the addition of some defensive depth is this team a “Stanley cup contender”. Other than bringing in depth he is done for the offseason.

I tend to think you're right... but just maybe he's just saying those because what else would there be to say? "I don't think our team is a stanley cup contender" would be awful PR, and maybe he just doesn't wanna bring in expectation for him to sign or trade for a key guy since he knows both are unlikely or at least have a decent enough chance of not happening...

Who knows. It's his organization, I tend to think he's not blind to the reality of his roster if we're not, but then again he could be secretly content with not being a big contender next season.
