If Gally wants term

Created by: SevenLeg
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 14, 2020
Published: Oct. 14, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know that this is a contract that will not age well, but if that's the price to keep him at a low cap hit while being competitive, we should do it. Give him a Kreider-type contract with one more year at a lesser cap hit due to Covid

Can't imagine Lehkonen takes a 7 year deal at that money.

It's a Colton Sissons type of deal. Lehkonen probably knows that he isn't gonna improve drastically, so he could want stability and financial security instead of taking short term deals and moving constantly.

I think it's reasonable as guys like Lehkonen know they might be one shooting slump season from the KHL (not fair to him but) and would love stability

It's pretty sobering how abruptly an NHL career can end for a small guy who doesn't put up big numbers

It's incredibly stupid and this league is dumb, but

"Hey Gally...we love ya, and definitely want to keep you long term, so how about we give you less AAV than we just gave Josh Anderson? yayaya, we know that you're pretty much a sure bet to hit 30 goals every year, but c'mon...The only thing from Alberta that the people of our province love more than you are the transfer payments!"

That seems like a solid way to get him to walk.

Anderson contract could be the minimum indeed, but Gallagher said he valued guaranteed money. It would start at 5.5m 7 years with a front loaded contract with plenty of the contract in early bonuses.

He deserves $ but the best would be a low cap hit. Molson gotta use his $ early in his contract.

Edit: Also, this whole "Due to covid" thing is getting to be a bit bonkers. Covid didn't just walk in and throw bags of cash at Toffoli and Anderson-Your GM did.

Lol you're gonna nitpick for 250k less than Anderson. There are 9 millions left in cap space so it's just the concept of giving more term and less cap hit, we can definitely give him more money. Your statement about the transfer payment is just plain stupid.

Transfer payments were a thing before Canada even existed, when Alberta was just grass and trees and Ontario and Quebec were the most productive provinces by a huge margin. The current perequation formula is designed by Albertans Stephen Harper & Al O'Brien. Québec gets more money because out of all the provinces that are admissible, it's the most populous. Per habitant, we are the ones that get the least out of all the provinces that receive it.

Is there a contingency plan in place for when they need to unload Gally when he's 33 and scoring 28 points a year or is bloated salary just the goal overall

Those type of deals backfire almost every time

      Lather, rinse, repeat

Ehhhhh, just a friendly jab from an Atlantic Canadian who also enjoys a few transfer payments tears of joy No need to get too shaken up...

As for the actual contract. You say "Kreider-type money", ($45.5 mil/7 years), then give him 3.5 mil less, and an extra year. That's not "Kreider-type money", that's low balling one of your best players. If he goes to open market, he'll make $6+ easily.

Yeah and with so many teams right now desperately struggling from the past versions of those deals. Neal, Lucic, Okposo, Turris, Eriksson, Stepan, etc. Unreal.

Gally > Kreider, or at least equal to. Kreider=$6.5/7years. $6 mil *SHOULD* be the starting point. There's no reason he can't get that type of money elsewhere.

That's also totally doable in terms of cap space, but not sure MB wants that.

$6 might be a thing, but I really think that Kreider's contract is the comparable at this point, and Gally means a heck of a lot more to the Habs than Kreider meant to the Rangers (And that's not a slight at Kreider, but with where the Rags were in their rebuild, the Kreider contract wasn't really a necessity)

Totally agree with you on that one.
Gallagher brings MUCH MORE than just goals. He is a Heart and Soul LEADER.

I would easily give Gallagher 6 millions X 7. Maybe even 8 years. For leadership, for character. For TEAM SPIRIT. For him to be there with Price and Weber as THE C-O-R-E leaders.

      No question.

      8 years @ 6 millions. Done.

He was playing with a tear in his hip that he got in the qualifying round...since 2014-2015, Kreider has only played 12 more games than Gallagher.

That's fine. I'm sure the Rangers would jump at the chance to give you him.
