This is how much Hughes and Petey will sign for

Description
Due to the economic climate I believe that they are both going to want 2 to 3 year bridge deals and cash in once things stabilize a bit more soooooo:

Hughes - I was trying to find the best cap comparable and I think the closet one might be Werenski. He signed a 3 year at a 6.14% cap hit. Hughes would command more than that but Werenski signed with the team knowing the cap would go up which most likely wont be the case with for the cap in the next few years. The cap may stay flat for a little bit so I'm gong to say Hughes signs at cap hit of 3 year cap hit of between 6.0% (4,890000) and 7.0% (5,705,000)

Petey - I think the closest contract I can find might be Sebastian Aho which is a little bit of unique case with the offer sheet that drove up the price. Its also a 5 year compared to that of the 3 year. Aho is more than goal scorer and really lit it up his last year before the contract. Petey hasn't put up as many goals but has put up more points than Aho through the first 2 years. If Petey can find another gear this year (tough in a shortened season) I think it comes in a little under Ahos 10.37 on a 5 year (goal scorers get more). So lets say 9 to 10% for a 5 year (7,335,000 to 8,150,000).

A 3 year would look less than this and a good comparable would be Brayden Point at a 3 year 8.28% Point killed it in the year before he signed that deal (92 points). Its tough because you would also need to take in the sunshine tax or lack there off, which works out to an extra 589,000 approximate needed to be added to keep the same net in Vancouver which is right around the 9% mark. So again if Petey really kills it he could be looking maybe between the 8.5 to 9% but I think realistically your probably going to be between 7% to 8% (5705000 to 6520000) on a 3 year deal.

Conclusion: Thanks to a bit of chill showed by Benning on large contracts coming into Vancouver would look something like this 2021 to 2022. Even with Demko to be signed I think your looking good on the cap with options (Exapnsion draft, Holtby maybe, Ferland to IR, salary dumps trades and buyouts to open up some more) . Just be careful of 2024 season where they will look to cash in big

Honestly I don’t think your close. I think both will get 8+ regardless of term. Maybe the flat cap changes that but I don’t think so considering that Reinhart, Anderson and domI recently signed for 5+. I don’t think the comparable are horrible but u seem to use the lowest ones, Petey could easily ask for marner money.

I'm expecting Petey to get at least the same amount as Aho is getting, no matter the term.

Can't see Hughes getting less that $6,5M either.

They're only signed to bridge deals here though which is why they're lower but I think they're optimistically low especially for three year bridge deals.

They're really going to need to clear off at least one or two of the Eriksson, Beagle or Roussel contracts after next season ends.

Pearson, Benn, Sutter and Baertschi expiring helps for one of them on a long term deal but not both plus the rest of the roster needs to be filled out, maybe they can pawn someone off on Seattle.

Wishful thinking.

I feel like Petey could be locked up 9x8 but I could be wrong

Despite the statements above this, I agree with your assessment kinda. Hughes on a bridge deal should be shy of 6M - about what you gave him. I don't think Pettersson takes a 3 year bridge though. He's set to get $, and it will cost a good bit to buy UFA years. My bet is 500k more than the Barzal deal.

I agree with the short term bridge deal in this "flat cap" world we're in but I think your numbers are very optimistic and on the low end. I think they will both sign 2 or 3 yr deals around 7M aav (not necessarily matching deals)

for all you saying 8 year deals, its dumb, why would Vancouver carry their contracts into UFA status for them to split.

they will get a bridge deal that leads them 1 left of RFA status, then signed to 8 year deals.

Pettersson will be 4 year $34m
Hughes will be 4 year 28m.

After those bridges

Petterson 8 year $100m
Hughes 8 year $84m
lol

Some good points on here, probably the greatest one is the Domi contract. It puts a spin on things. Domi a center at a 2 year 6.5% cap hit could defiantly swing things compared to Petey signing at 8% over 3 years? Maybe that does push Petey to the 8.5, 9 region but my moneys still on the 8% region.

Anderson: I can honestly say, and I think the rest of the NHL was saying the same thing, woooooh there Hab nation. The contract looks like an outlier.

Marner: Again Marner put up 92 points the season before he signed. He also signed when the cap was going up each year. He also signed in Toronto on a front loaded contract. I'm not saying Petey isn't as good as Marner but with seasons of 66 and 66 points under his belt in which he hasn't gotten over the 30 goal mark (scorers get more) he needs to step it up another gear in a shortened season to get into big time money.

The hype is real with this kid but I'm just trying to be realistic and put it into perspective compared to other signings. A remember this could be the cap for 3 or 4 years!!
