Going All In

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 13, 2020
Published: Dec. 13, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I can see the argument on how it is not a good idea to give up all these assets for rentals, but I feel this is the last chance the Leafs have to contend with this core. If they disappoint again, they are going to have a major shakeup anyway so might as well go all in and build as strong of a team as possible.

Guys on LTIR are my taxi squad players.

Considering this is the first full year Dubas has his own coach in place, I really don't see the panic, or this being the last chance for this group.

You can probably pump the breaks a bit.

You are right man. But honestly, I think all the forwards on my team are pretty defensively responsible except Marner, Nylander & Robertson.

I guess I should say, I love foligno. Would be happy to have him. Or is brother Nick (just cheaper).

I would also take Boone Jenner any day. Blue Jackets fans seem to want him gone. I feel there would be a line up for him.

Yeah that’s fair. This was technically Dubas’ first offseason in which he had full control of the team’s transactions (last year he had to clean up Lou’s Zaitsev and Marleau contracts).

Yeah Boone is a really solid player with grit & heaviness. IDK why Jackets fans dislike him, he seems to fit perfectly in their system.

Yeah Foligno’s a beast. I definitely think he could fetch a first.

I think you are over valuing him. I mean, you have him on the first line. Even in minnisota, he's a 4th liner. He's a great player, but not worth a first as a rental.

Exactly. Not every gritty 3rd/4th liner turns into Tom Wilson the minute you play them with a star player.

Do you guys think my armchair team can win the cup?

Of course not. Pretty weak LW. Foligno's nice but he's not even a LW top winger on a middling to poor Minnesota team. Yep, Olesiak is OK, but to flip to the right side, and to trade the dependable Holl isn't really an advantage to the Leafs. Really don't you think it's a kinda ridiculous post to think adding Foligno and Olesiak minus Holl makes that much of difference to the Leafs changes this season (and to give up a 1st and 2nd too)shakes head

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah it definitely seems a bit much to give up a 1st for Foligno.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah it’s not ideal to give up all those assets for rentals. I do think Oleksiak makes a difference though, he conceded shot attempts and chances at some of the lowest rates in the league last season. Holl is good & I’d keep him if there was cap space, but I feel Oleksiak can push Toronto’s blue line to be one of the better ones in the league.

Can he play his off-side though. Any time I saw him he was playing with Heiskanen (who was playing RD).

I watched him in PIT when he was playing the right side & from everything I’ve read about him, he can play either.

6 LDs and two overpayments...can't see that being a recipe for success.

Overpay for both

Yes I agree it’s an overpayment. But I feel that’s what it’ll have to take cuz both players are really good.

ummm... marner penalty kills, blocks shots, defends better than the majority of the forwards on last year's team. he was better than johnson, mikheyev, nylander, kapanen, kerfoot, spezza, gauthier, and engvall. not sure why you hate marner so much; your name is marnerelite, and yet you are always trying to find ways to trash his contract (you're giving him 8M at times, he's worth 9M at least and even 10M imo, 10.9 is a bit much but that's fine, he's a crucial player to the team). he brings heart and soul every day, he loves this team, he puts his body on the line for this team (see: boston game), and has an insane hockey iq and eye for the game. he's a special player. not sure why everyone is hating on him so much. mitch is a beast. the advanced stats don't bring up blocked shots - they only measure how many goals he prevented based on shots on target while he was on the ice - not including the blocked shots, which is why mitch's advanced defensive stats don't tell the whole story. watch the games; he sacrifices everything for this team (maybe not money) and he wants to win more than any other player on the ice. he's certainly our second best player and forward, and he's a hometown kid. if i see another post of someone's where they go off criticizing marner for the details of his game, yall r getting an essay. look nylander's my favorite player, but i can admit there are undoubtedly more flaws with nylander (see: defense) than there are with marner. both are incredible players. it's because they play for the leafs which is why they get so much hate. stop picking. we have an incredible core group - but these kids are 22-24. they're kids. stop picking on them. jeez.
