Jaros will never be more than a 6/7 D, and Wolanin is just a 4/5 D, so the SJS offer seems fair, and Nick Paul, who's very underrated but not a core piece, is worth a bit more than a 5th, but Ottawa probably still doesn't do these trades because they don't need picks if they are going for it. Their cap hit is $3MM combined, so they aren't cap dumps, they're squeezed out. I'd trade Watson before Paul, and send a waivers exempt player down before trading Wolanin. There's no D extra, and two extra F in your lineup, so an exempt F can be sent down to balance the roster. Josh Norris at $925K makes room for Wolanin's $900K.
It would be very short sighted for Ottawa to trade Stuetzle for Toews, even if they thought it was the last piece to put them over.
Ottawa isn't ready to compete. Yes they signed Dadonov, but that's because this is the year he was a FA. I'm sure they would have wanted to wait until next season to sign a dynamic goal scorer. Right player, close enough to the timeline.
If Ottawa wanted to contend this season, they would need a reliable top6 C, a complimentary 1st pair RD, and a solid 2nd pair LD, and that just gets them into the playoffs.
GIve the rookies a chance to develop. Stuetzle, Brannstrom, and Sanderson will get them into the playoffs soon enough, and Batherson, LBrown/Norris, Thomson/JBD, Balcers/Abramov/Formenton will get them deeper into the playoffs. I'm not going to list every Sens prospect here.
Just be patient, but...
If I did want to try for this season, I'd probably target Anthony Cirelli, Dante Fabbro, and Calvin De Haan, who aren't as good as Stuetzle, Brannstrom, and Sanderson, but this is about making the playoffs now.
