Why would the rangers do this? Just terminate the deal.

See, the issue here is that you’re thinking Tampa WANTS to get rid of Johnson, when it’s actually that they want to get rid of his cap hit. It has nothing to do with the player or his ability, it’s that they want to clear that $5 mil away. At this point, it seems easier to move Johnson than ADA though 😂

Johnson's deal is a drag, but he's loved by the guys in the locker room. Not worth bringing in someone who was already kicked out of the org before.

You're right, but they are tied together and can't be untied. I often think about players that make too much money and how it keeps them from winning championships. Obviously TJ won, but TB tried their best to give him away and nobody wanted him.
Imagine having a 1 million dollar Milan Lucic on your 4th line? Of 1-2 mill James Neal on your 3rd line and 2 PP? Im all about guys getting paid, but it would be cool to see
