Price check on Johansen

Created by: OutCold13
Team: 2020-21 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 19, 2021
Published: Feb. 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
How far does this team go in the playoffs? I do realize that this put Guerin in a difficult place when it comes to expansion, but if he believes this team can win then you go forward and except that you may lose a good player.
I am still not certain Johansen is a good idea for the Wild but @TanSor had a strong argument and I figure it's worth looking into.
Trades
MIN
  1. Johansen, Ryan
Additional Details:
Not sure I've nailed the value, @TanSor kinda got my mind thinking on this and so I'm trying to hash it out.
NSH
  1. Johansson, Marcus
  2. Rask, Victor
  3. 2021 1st round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
I know Johansson has little value to the Preds but he is to offset cap and keep Preds from having to retain. Rask isn't great but he can be productive when used in offensive zone starts. The 1st and the freed up cap space is the prize for Nashville. Keep in mind finding a team that can take the entire cap hit will be difficult.

After 2 isn't he a ufa?

27 or 7 to be a UFA. He'll meet the 80 games played so he won't be group 6 UFA like Soucy was. A 2 year keeps him as a RFA, although he could file for arbitration and force his way out in 2 more years after that.

3 and 4 year deals are out imo. 1-2 years, 5-6 years, and 7-8 year deals are the offers I see MN making. It's why I think 6 years is the best for both sides It's 3 years RFA ($5m-ish) and 3 years UFA ($10m-ish) meet in the middle somewhere around $7m-$8m/yr.

Yup, his ELC takes into account his professonal experience abroad I believe.

The KHL doesn't count towards anything in the NHL. The KHL/NHL don't have an transfer agreement in place. MN couldn't sign Kaprizov to a SPC while he was under contract in the KHL.

He also didn't play 10 NHL games in his 18 and 19 yo seasons so they wouldn't be counted as pro seasons anyways.

No it doesn't. This is the criteria:

1) Is 27 years of age on June 30 of the contract expiry year

OR

2) Has seven (7) Accrued Seasons where an Accrued Season is earned when the player was on the clubs active roster for 40 Regular Season games (30 if the player is a goaltender). Games missed due to a hockey related injury will count towards an accrued season in the season of the injury, plus one additional season after the injury.

He's not going to accrue the 7 seasons before he meets the age requirement, so it's going to be when he turns 27. He turns 27 in 2024, so the earliest he'll be eligible for UFA is July 1, 2024. That means he has 3 years left.

I guess I didn’t realize he’s that old...

Or how calendars work.

Getting back to Johansen, if the Wild wanted to gamble on acquiring him with his full term. Look at the buyout possibilities. With his contract being the way it is, a buyout after 1,2,or even 3 years isnt just to bad. A straight contract with no bonuses makes it this way. So if you can get some money back in a trade for him, great. But, it almost is a worthy gamble taking on the full contract, if you can get a trade that you like. But, I really don't think the Wild want to take on any Cap right now. Especially a 4 year 8M a season hit. That is, unless they think acquiring Johansen is worth it. My opinion is that it's a 50/50 gamble on being worth it. His buyout would be for instance. If you acquired him now and bought him out after the 2023 season. You would have a Cap hit of 2.67M for 4 seasons 24,25,26,and 27, while saving 5.33M for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. If you did it after 2024 you would only have a 2 year Cap hit of 2.67M.
