Description
Building off of the last post a bit...

San Jose is not in any position to make the playoffs and have a good run. I also don't think rebuilding is really an option given all the big contracts, nor do I really think it is necessary. I think if we can give Seattle a bigger contract and sign some quality players in free agency then we have a real shot in the 2021-22 season.

Trade Explanations

#1- I don't think Seattle will take Burns for free, so we would need to add some sweeteners. Gambrell is a decent prospect who could grow into a solid 3rd line forward after averaging close to a point per game in the AHL at 22 and 23 years of age. Jaros is decent and could develop into a decent 2nd pairing right-shot defenseman. The 2nd has solid value too as the 2022 draft is expected to be a strong one.

#2- Gregor is a solid prospect with middle-6 potential but I don't see anywhere for him in our lineup other than on the bottom line. He could be useful for the Caps on a team that needs youth.

#3- Same goes for Donato, not really sure where he would fill in. We just traded a 4th for him and I think he's performed well, so I think a 3rd and some scraps is a fair price.

#4- Similar situation to Gregor. Not really sure where he would slot-in other than on the 4th line and I think we could get a decent return for him.

Forward Lines

#1- Couture-Hertl-Meier
Solid top-line with our two young forwards and the captain. Good physicality and offense from Hertl and Meier could mesh well with the solid two-way ability from Couture.

#2- Kane-Danault-Labanc
A bit of everything. Kane has a solid physical game which could make up for the lack of physicality from Labanc. Danault is strong at faceoffs and solid defensively as well.

#3- Leonard-Bozak-Blichfeld
Bozak is good at faceoffs and his veteran presence could help the will-be 23-year-olds take their game to the next level.

#4- Armia-Handemark-True
With a bottom line of everyone being over 6'3 and 200 pounds, this line would be able to play a strong physical game. There is decent skill on this line as well.

Defensive Pairings

#1- With Burns gone, Karlsson would have to take the reigns as the clear #1 defenseman. Playing with EK65, Ferraro should be able to take his game to the next level.

#2- Merkley should be able to use his offensive talent knowing that Simek could cover for him with his strong shutdown game.

#3- Vlasic is fine, but nowhere close to where he used to be. Playing with the big Knyzhov, they might be able to become a sort of shutdown pair.

Goalies

Starter- Driedger has looked very solid in the small number of games he's played. He should be able to be a solid starter in the future as he is only 26.

Backup- Jones has had bright spots this season but hasn't been consistent. Playing as a backup, the extra rest should give him time to be strong in the games he will play.

If Balcers was placed on waivers recently, he probably doesn't get the Sharks a 3rd round pick IMO.

No thx. Portillo looks like a good prospect and we have had problems with the goalie's position for a long time. Donato does little for us.

Nothing wrong here tbh but I think you're asking for a bit much on Gregor and maybe Balcers as well. Burns expansion compensation is a bit rich for my tastes but if that's what it takes, I wouldn't be too mad. UFA signings are solid.

The Sabres will take Donato for a 3rd rounder, But that’s about it.

that's possible, but he's looked solid in the NHL so far so maybe that boosts his value. You're probably right tho.

would you do it for just the 3rd?

I mean a point per game at 22 is really good I think, but it's possible. Maybe a 3rd + a decent player/prospect is fairer? Since he was on waivers Balcers may be less too.

I mean it is a decent amount of compensation, but it's in places that we don't have a need for. Gambrell is good, but we have many players similar to him like Gregor/Blichfeld/Leonard/True, etc.
Jaros is decent as well, but we have Karlsson and Merkley who should be able to play top 4 minutes on the right side for a fair amount of time.
Losing that 2nd could hurt, but as you said, probably worth it if it gets rid of Burns' contract.

Possibly overpaid on Armia but for sure underpaid Danault. He's rejected a 4x5 from MTL. I would also strongly consider buying out Jones, just the term is a little brutal

Oh, I didn't know. We still have a million in cap space so would 5.5 do the trick?

Jones' save percentage is obviously terrible, but he's had some great games and some terrible ones, terribly inconsistent. I think he could be decent as a backup tho. We'll see how the rest of the season goes.

    I like Donato, but he’s a 3rd line player
We do have UPL as a really good goalie prospect, but he isn’t a sure thing either- so I’d like us to hang on to Portillo

If u wanna dump Donato for a pick, maybe
    Not for a 3rd though- maybe a 4th
If we are about to trade Eichel & go into a rebuild, then we’d likely want to keep all our picks

I mean I personally think he's worth a 3rd but the main point is to get rid of him so ig a 4th is fine

U might be able to get a 3rd for him somewhere,
but that could be pushing it

Yeah probably something more like that. Unfortunately guys who aren't really proven in the NHL aren't gonna draw a ton of value I think. Balcers is more established but still doesn't have a ton of experience and Gregor is just a tweener at the moment. As for the expansion draft, losing another 2nd kinda sucks and Gambrell is one of the few centers that we've had in our system that is both a good skater and a solid 200-foot game. But like I said, if that's what it takes to dump burns it's fine, it just stings.

Why trade backers of Gregor and then sign armia to put on the 4th line. And also Gregor doesn’t fetch a 2nd.

Because I don't really think it's worth it to put guys with lot's of potential on the 4th line. Maybe wishful thinking, but I think it's possible.
