Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 24, 2021
Published: Mar. 24, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't know if the Sabres would do this but I imagine they'd love to cut Skinners contract in half to give themselves some room to actually compete. They'd be taking on additional cap with Neal but his contract has no clauses and is much shorter, they also net themselves a 1st round pick for 2023 which gives them some time to fix the existing roster. If Skinner is able to return to his past self on the Oilers they'd have a good sniper for Mcdavid and be able to reunite the DRY line

Huh what. Buffalo would have to give us like 10 1st round picks to take that brutal contract. Why are we giving a first???

Not a bad idea. I actually kinda like it for both teams. I think Buffalo should have to add a 2nd though

Did you miss the half retention? Skinner at 4.5 would work out just fine for most teams.

No I got the retention. cost almost the same as Neal and he will be another Neal contract in a few years. Well he already is now.

We’ll see. Think there’s plenty of good hockey in him, as since he’s been playing with actual nhlers he has been playing better. Listen, I think everyone knew when he signed for what he did it was a massive overpay. At 4.5 tho, kinda think he could def help a team. Neal on the other hand doesn’t do anything. Basically a 4.5 Skinner isn’t nearly as bad as you are making him out to be. Not even close.

He has 3 goals and 4 points this year in 27 games. If thats playing better I would hate to see when he plays worse

And 2 of those goals came when he hasn’t been buried on the 4th line getting 10 minutes a game with the Riley Sheahan ‘s of the world. Now that the soccer coach is gone, wouldn’t surprise me to see him scoring more regularly, as he actually gets ice time. Can’t score if you aren’t on the ice

Cant be on the ice if you are not trying and playing good. For 9 million dollar contract he better push his on line. Drai makes 8.5 and everyone said he was overpaid.

Not me, was good to get him locked up at that price. Wish Buf woulda had the balls to do Reinhart for the 5x5.5 he wanted 2 years ago. And as previously mentioned, Skinner is overpaid. But he isn’t overpaid by double. That’s the point. And not a “they have to pay 10 firsts” half a contract either. Like I said we’ll see how he does without the guy who clearly had a thing against him. You don’t just score 40 goals by accident. He still has skill and I would much rather get him to play well for Buffalo to something along the line of being 25/30 goal a year guy then ship him off and have to pay (either by retaining or trading picks, at least until there’s fewer years remaining). Either way Buf is ****ed, so don’t hamstring the future.

having at least 4-6 million in dead cap the next 2 years is already too much why would you even think about Skinner.

I actually would like to see skinner with mcdavid and jp extremely mobile line excellent skaters that being said I’ve looked at that several times trying to find a way to make sense of it but that contract prevents everything. It’s unreasonable to think Buffalo will retain that type of money over that term. Unfortunately for both sides can’t see anyway to make this work. I honestly wish there was a sensible way to work this out because I do believe skinner is a very interesting player that’s been stuck in a bad situation.

To be fair skinner is a fantastic skater I’d rank him within top ten in the league not the fastest but unbelievably agile can turn on a dime like very very few. Have no idea how much he’s actually worth dollar wise which needs to be determined for retention purposes because he’s a good player caught in a horrible situation. He’s a guy I’d love to see on oilers if could make sense of it which I just don’t see how.

Dude.... Skinner is 10x better than Neal. Skinner is a great player and if he only costs 4.5 that becomes a top contract in the league.

@fishanlers it would be cheaper for Buffalo to buy him out than trade him at 50% and watch him score 40+ goals a year with McDavid

I never said who is better. I dont want that contract for the next 7 years. One of the leagues worst.

@Skyraider112

The buyout would be bad because it's nearly 15 million to him not playing for the team and would handicap the Sabres for longer (12 years) than swapping it with Neal who has no clauses for only 3 years. The Sabres take on some additional cap but it's moveable.

I could see the exact % fluctuating a little but I can't see anyone wanting to take on a reclamation project for much over 5 million, especially with such long term.

The Sabres wouldn't be trading FOR Neal so much as his freeing contract and that 1st. It would really depend on if they think they can get Skinner back to being a 40 goal scorer or not
