Description
Working off of the assumptions that:

A. Holland doesn't want to move his bigger assets.
B. The price of the more talked-about rentals is far too high for Edmonton to consider.
C. Holland prefers bargain-bin shopping ever since getting burned on Athanasiou.

Namestnikov's history with skilled players hopefully gives Edmonton a more secure opportunity to keep Draisaitl and McDavid separated outside of desperation states. Brassard comes in to shore up a sheltered-minutes third line. Ryan comes in to complete the defensive backbone of the team and help bolster our penalty kill. The Kings deal secures a depth defender for the playoffs while returning a touch of draft capital. Ennis and Kahun remain interchangeable.

The idea is to run the loaded up top-two lines for the majority of evens while cycling in shifts from a sheltered third line and garbage-minutes fourth line. Give the opposition too much to focus on in the McDavid and DYNamite lines in order to allow the third to capitalize on some lesser opposition. The fourth line can take on the toughest matchups when those lines aren't being matched against one of Edmonton's top two lines.

The Oilers are already showing to be relatively competent and that their biggest failing this season is Tippett's suboptimal usage of his roster. Smaller fixes like these only make the Oily Boys machine run smoother and take a bit of the load off of Edmonton's top players. They're already keeping pace with the Leafs and the Jets despite their current warts; a more balanced roster gives them the ability to surpass them. There's still a very likely chance that Edmonton gets goalie'd by any of Campbell, Hellebyuck, or Price in the post-season (happens to everyone honestly) but this roster construction gives them as strong as a roster as I've seen this club have.

I suspect a goalie fix doesn't happen until the offseason. 7 days is still too long of a wait for the Oilers to ride one of Smith into the ground with their recently condensed schedule, and trade prices seem rather unrealistic at the moment. I'd target Ullmark in free agency.

I'm curious as to what the expected return on an unretained Ryan is and why Shore as a club-controlled #4C for next season isn't it. Chiasson's inevitable to make the money work and keeps the Flames from taking on a second year of Turris.

I have his value pegged at about a 5th, given that he's an expensive 4th-liner. What are you expecting?

Why would LA want either of those players? Honestly the 4th is the most valuable piece in that entire trade.

The Namestnikov idea isn't bad, definitely a 3rd best player on a skilled line kind of guy who has thrived with that in the past. With him locked in for next season, that's a deal I'd be willing to send Benson in for for sure. If not many other deals happen to figure out the offset cap space ,could perhaps send Turris as well to offset cap, and add a later pick from the Oil as well. Or move Chiasson as part of the deal.

Any Detroit fans out there with perspectives on Namestnikov and how he's playing/what the team wants to do with him?

Lagesson's an NHL-ready top six defender with his only real drawback being Edmonton having two defencemen better than him that they currently aren't playing. He's an excellent bottom-of-the-roster player for the Kings to pick up, and acquiring Turris at the sake of an AHL defenceman is a win no matter which way you slice it. The Kings have more than enough cash to take him on and they don't give up much of anything.

The odds of that 4th round pick playing as many games as Lagesson and Turris would for the Kings is low. Really low. It's a fine deal for a rebuilding team that's still in need of NHL bodies for the rest of this season and for next.

Sure honest take. He's a bottom 6 forward whose super fast and will score a decent amount, nothing overwhelming. He's a good piece to have on your team with an extremly friendly cap hit. Could play any of the 3F positions and could play top 6 if needed. However at this time he's one of our only forwards signed past this year, he's from the Detroit area, he wants to be in Detroit which is hard to come by right now and just brings the right kind of veteran mindset to a team whose rebuilding and loses a lot. All of it means he would be a great depth option for a team that needs his skills, but the wings are not looking to trade him for all those other various reasons at this time. Maybe next trade deadline would be a different story

I can't see Edmonton moving Lagesson for nothing. They need 8-9 D-men if they are going to the playoffs and there is no way they play Bear and Bouchard like that otherwise they would be doing it already.
Especially considering klefbom's status is still unknown, Samorukov is injured for half of next season, Broberg isnt ready yet, and they will likely lose a LD in the expansion draft they need to keep every last dman they have.

You vastly under-estimate the intelligence of the men at the wheel of our lineup. Koskinen let in two bad goals and Bouchard hasn't seen a game since. Tippett is very reactionary and very rarely ices an optimal lineup.

Edmonton has 9 defencemen with this setup: Russell and Lagesson offer effectively the same skillset, while Lennstrom offers more offense. Alt has NHL experience and can step in for injuries.

I also fully disagree with needing to keep Lagesson for the sake of not knowing what the situation come free agency will be like. Neither Broberg nor Samorukov should be full-time NHL options next season (like 9 games apiece maximum), and all things are pointing to Klefbom being ready for the start of next season, if not by November at the latest. Lagesson is not a top-four defender and likely won't be one come this time next year. Edmonton's best bet is to sign a name like Cole on a one-year deal and have him slot in the top four until Klefbom is ready. Broberg can have his 9 games to start the season if Oscar needs more time or they can allow Russell to start the season before being scratched the rest of it.

Klefbom's recovery time is 6-9 Months and shoulder surgery was not the primary plan. The type of surgery he has had is still not disclosed. If its a full replacement his playing days are over.

Great to know thanks! Was surprised not seeing him discussed more. Makes sense if Detroit is a good spot for him personally they may try to trade a lot of other players first.

Who does Lagesson displace on LA? Bjornfot, Anderson? Maatta and MacDermid can't be waived until after the expansion draft, so unless he's taking one of those guys' place of 33 or 44, there's no room for him in the NHL this season. Lagesson does not satisfy the 27/54 expansion draft exposure requirements.

So next season, you say? The Kings already have an overwhelming amount of nearly-ready NHL talent in Ontario, with Clague, Hults, Brickley, and now Wolanin all ready for NHL ice time. If Lagesson is as good as you say, then he'll immediately get claimed by Seattle in the expansion draft, as the Kings don't have the protection slots to prevent Seattle from taking him. If he's not, then the Kings are trading a draft pick for a 25-year old AHL defender.

There's absolutely no reason for LA to do this trade, as neither piece fills a gap or is beneficial to them in any way.

Wolainen is an AHL player at this point in his career, at best injury insurance. I'd personally have one of Bjornfot and Anderson in the AHL (probably Andy). What has Hults done to warrant an NHL roster position? What has Brickley done to suggest he's going to play another NHL game for the Kings? From an outside perspective it seems like the Kings aren't going to resign him.

Clague is likely NHL ready, so I'll give you that one. Whether or not the Kings keep Maatta is another thing. You somewhat contradict yourself regarding Seattle: unless Lagesson does play his 11 games remaining, he won't need to be exposed. Something as simple as player management can fix that: he could rotate in and out of the games Los Angeles has left and still not need to be exposed.

But I'll concede here. It's not the best fit for Lagesson, thank you for pointing that out.

I have no idea what the thinking is behind the LA deal, as Turris can be buried on the taxi squad with most of that money disappearing. I'm 100% sure Tippett would rather keep Lagesson, who he's playing every night right now and obviously trusts a great deal.

Aside from that though, great job. I think this is a decent improvement over the current roster.

And Chiasson can be flipped for a pick since he's a pending UFA.

Cap constraints and getting something of value in return for Lagesson. One of Turris or Lagesson needs to go in order to accommodate the rest of these deals, or Edmonton pays the Flames more to retain on Ryan. Not sure Detroit has much incentive to retain, and Arizona flat-out won't given their financials.

that or he just parks himself in front of the net on a powerplay and has pucks bounced off him for 20 more games. could be flipped or could be a good right shot piece the flames want to bring back closer to a million dollar contract next season.

Anderson has slotted in nicely in the 1LD position, playing over 22 minutes per game, and received several Calder nods in polls this year. He definitely does not belong in the AHL.

I'm not suggesting that any or all of those defensemen are better than Lagesson, just that they are all ready to make the jump to the NHL and looking for ice time.

Finally, that's not how expansion protection works. Lagesson needs to be protected regardless of how many games he plays this season. He has more than 2 professional seasons. The 27/54 rule only applies to whether a player satisfies the exposure requirements for a team (i.e. every team must expose at least one defenseman that played in 27 games this season or 54 games combined in the last two season). Lagesson is not exempt from protection if he doesn't play 11 more games.

Thanks for the clarification regarding expansion. I'll probably never really understand how the league makes it work. And that'll teach me for just looking at statlines, I should know better. Thanks again.

You aren't getting anything of value though. And now you've changed the deal to make it worse, as the only thing of value you were getting was a bit of cap space from moving Turris, you aren't even getting that now.
