I mean that's a HAUL for Severson no argue on the value coming back. But the Devils have no right side of their defense and getting rid of Severson would be really damaging for the development of Ty Smith and Mackenzie Blackwood. For that reason and that reason alone I'd say no deal.

As much I want to keep Severson, Devils should do this trade

Two bad trades for the Leafs. Kerfoot is better than Bennett. And to exchange Dermot for Severson (who moves to a the left side) makes no sense even on the surface. Then to add the equivalent of three 1sts and a second.....a real overpay for no apparent reason.

Just outta curiosity what if there were no picks, just Dermott, Lily & Amirov??

I don't understand the comment in your Team Explanation about needing to extend a forward in order to have two qualified forwards to present to Seattle. If you're trading for Severson, and paying a high price for him, then presumably you're going to protect him, thus four defensemen and so four forwards -- The Big Four. Bennett and Engvall would then be your two qualifying forwards.

Honestly thought he played left. That might be enough for me to bite even tho Id be concerned about Smith and Blackwood that value is too good to pass up

Engvall yes but Bennett's not under contract for next season, he's RFA, so if I remember correctly, Leafs would need another forward under contract to leave exposed to meet the draft requirements.

If the Leafs qualified Bennett as 2.55m he would eligible for draft requirements. But Bennett shouldn't be qualified, since he isn't worth his contract. Engvall is a better centre than Bennett.
But really why do you think Severson is such a great improvement over Bogosian or Dermot, to give up all those other young assets? And certainly Severson's cap of over 4m is too much for the Leafs next season.

No, it's UFAs that don't count towards qualifying. For example, if Denis Malgin plays 10 more games this season, he would be a qualifying forward.

But then again, now that I look at the CapFriendly expansion draft framework, I see that they treat 2021 RFAs differently from 2022 RFAs, so maybe you're right and I'm wrong. I can't find a schedule that lists the non-game events (like when the free agency period begins or when teams must offer qualifying offers) for this season.

I would not do this from Devils perspective.
Its a decent offer if NJD were selling Sevs, but he is too important to team.
I think NJD only does this if there were a top-4 d-man returning.

Doesn't that depend on how you view Lily or do you mean a current top 4?

View him as #4 or #5
Severson is our #1
Losing Murray, Kulikov, Vatanen this year
Subban next year
Just don’t have defensive depth to be dealing our top guy.
Also, Leafs will lose d-man in expansion draft
