Its a 2023 3rd so for Chicago it would hold as much value as a 2021 3rd. We will see, wouldn't mind getting anything just to get his cap hit off the books.

Sharks decline

Hallander could be decent, but very unlikely he'll be as good as Hertl imo

But you also get a first round pick for a guy who is gonna walk in summer of 2022 for nothing.

Oleksiak isn't better than Dermott, I wouldn't give a 2nd for him

I guess I shouldn't care as much when I see fans wanting to add several new roster players with like 10 games left. It never works well and usually is counter productive but fans will be fans.

Well then it's a no deal. We want a 2nd to move him, if we don't get it we aren't moving him, it's simple.

Well if you understand asset management, then you understand how you can get future assets in return for a good player who will walk for nothing in 2 seasons. Trade him now when he has 1.5 years left on contract because that carries value, instead of dealing him a year from now for a 2nd round pick or equivalent.

Okay but that would be dumb of SJ because Hertl has a lot of value now because he has 1.5 years left on contract. If they wait till the next deadline he won't be worth as much, and it's not like SJ will even challenge for the playoffs.

I wouldn't go that far. Oleksiak is like 6'7. I like him because he would be a great duo with Bogo, the "hard to play against" duo. I would deal a second and Engvall for him (Dallas needs forwards), but no more than that.

"It's called asset management" he says after overpaying on 3 trades.

Another laughton trade, with no reason for PHI to accept.

I'll say it again, if the Leafs are looking to upgrade, you have to at least offer quality. If you truly believe you'll have a good playoffs, (and all signs point to yes), then your draft picks will be low.

Offers of mid level prospects, or AHL/NHL tweeners like andersen, barabanov, engvall, brooks, rosen, etc... and low picks in rounds 3 or 4, 2 SEASONS AWAY, is not quality. Its like the ghost of Jeremey Bracco over and over

Im not saying you have to overpay but the offers are so unequal....

You just said SJ wouldn't do that because they need more..... where did I overpay. Sure SJ can decline, they have a weak prospect pool and are going no where with a plethora of bad contracts. Lose Hertl in summer 22' for nothing and keep coming last, orrrrrr trade him for assets who will contribute to the team a few years down the road. Not like SJ will be competitive this year or the next.

I didn't say anything about SJ. I believe trading several players with such little time in the season left it dumb and will do more harm than good.

Fair point. Kokkanen is a third equivalent. If Laughton was on contract for more than this season then things would be different. Keep in mind that Philly could always sign him as a UFA in the summer, and come out with two decent assets. But your point is fair, Leafs would probably need to dish a second to get him.

If you've ever played hockey you understand its harder to play against bigger defensemen than a smaller one. You are just commenting to argue but you have 0 reasoning behind you're motive. Oleksiak is better than Dermott, and he is big and plays physical which helps because the Leafs are a softer team.

Dermott has been good this year. His advance numbers are as good and better than Oleksiak. And that is with him having Bogosian as a partner. Who does Oleksiak play with? One of the best defenceman in the game. So how do you think he'll do with a worse partner? Better than Dermott? Highly unlikely. As you can see, I am using a lot of reasoning.

I agree, your point of two decent assets in regards to 2 3rds is still meh when you consider the prospect depth Philly has. (Right now their ahl team has 5 rookie dmen including wylie, millman, cam york and zamula. And they have (among others) rookies foerester, wisdom, allison, ratcliffe, sandin at forward. And all playing amazingly well. with top end prospects frost and bobby brink on way)

And youre right its a UFA rental, that PHI might re-sign, but Laughton is a player of desire for quite a few clubs. I've long said his value is higher than his pts, and a 2nd and 3rd probably do it. I think I went with a mid-top of mid level prospect like a Hallander and a 2nd in 2023 is probably close.
