Flexing some cap space

Description
Playing around with some ideas on using cap space before expansion draft.

The WAS deal is if Caps won't protect Schultz. I figured if Nate Schmidt got a 3rd, a 4th maybe be reasonable here with expansion draft looming.

TBL wanted a RHD in return for dealing Foote with Johnson, so Schultz, retained, goes to Lightning. I am adding a pick as well.

Other deals are just small-ball cap dumps

I don’t think Schultz is a cap dump that’d be traded by Washington. Plus Tampa is gonna need Foote going forward so they most likely wouldn’t move him (depends on who they protect 4-4-1 or 7-3-1 in expansion draft).

At the minimum, you’ll have to buy him out.

The difference of buying him out and sending him down to the AHL is 900K and an extra year of him on the books . Canucks will be fine we have a lot of players on ELC and low cost contracts. They will leave Beagle on LTIR and maybe buy out Virtanen . The GM already said two weeks ago don't believe what you read we will be fine for the cap

I don’t doubt that. Was really just an afterthought to fill up some cap space.

Considering Quinn and Pettersson now have same agent as Eriksson, I am guessing a move could be found. But suit yourself.

So you think Canucks would not match an offer sheet haha. How many 10 million OS have happened in the last 10 years?

WSH has seven NHL defensemen signed through next year, plus some decent prospects who should be ready, and maybe Chara again? They could trade Dillon or Kempny, most likely? But playoff performance always weighs heavily with MacLellan.

Schultz and Carlson are the guys who have a lot of power play experience/skill, so neither seems likely to be given away. I could see Schultz being exposed in expansion more easily than the above trade.

Also, the Capitals depth at RHD tails off significantly after Carlson and Schultz. If Schultz goes away then Jensen becomes a Top-4 and Van Riemsdyk becomes an everyday 3rd pairing guy. The other option would be to bring up Fehervary although he is a left shot and provides nowhere near as much offense.

Personally, I'd rather protect Dillon over Orlov because of cap hit and if Orlov got selected just bring up Alexeyev and Fehervary and let them duel it out for a roster spot.

I'd think Orlov is more likely to be taken, no?
Schultz... I thought would have been least likely since he has one only year remaining (after expansion draft)

I feel like the Capitals will need to shed roughly 5 million from their current cap to re-sign Ovechkin and Samsonov not even factoring in whether Kempny will be back off of LTIR or if Chara may be interested in returning. I don't see Ovechkin taking less than 10,000,000 even in a flat cap. Orlov makes 5.1 so it's perfect and the Caps get to keep Oshie in this scenario and open a spot at LHD for Alexeyev or Fehervary.

I'd think Seattle takes younger, lesser priced option over Oshie.
Maybe Kuznetsov if he were unprotected ... but otherwise maybe Conor Sheary
