Columbus gets a very competent center that can also play the wing. Fits the team fit right away. Savoie is a wildcard but could turn out well. Laine and Merzlikins fits Edmonton perfect but losing Holloway hurts. He has been so good this year. It is almost as if he is morew valuable than Laine lol. I would love Merzlikins and Laine on my team but Holloway is an untouchable for me. He is just too all around with his 200 fott game awell. Swap him for Lavoie and I accept if I am Ken Holland.

That first rounder is basically paying off CBJ to take Koskinens cap hit so in reality it’s Laine and Merziklins for Holloway, Savoie and 2nd, I doubt CBJ accepts.

Columbus would listen on Laine - but never do a Elvis and Laine deal with EDM. I’d think they have no desire to acquire a older and worse goalie. And paying more assets wouldn’t be ideal for EDM because I reaaaaally like Holloway personally and I’m not a EDM fan. Losing more prospects and picks to pay for Elvis wouldn’t be worth it while also paying up with Holloway plus for Laine.

I’m not like most of the people above, Kosi isn’t bad but just there’s no reason to acquire him for Columbus. They’d entertain Laine for Holloway and a pick and whatever change is needed but it stops there.

I really don’t want him. I rather have our picks, and prospects honestly.

I don't know where you both got this logic, but it just doesn't seem true. In reality, Koskinen likely wouldn't cost a 1st to move. I agree that he doesn't have much value, but I don't think he's negative value either. He's shown at times he's capable of being at least a league average goalie that can handle some games well. He has he pretty noticeable defeats, but a lot of goalies have that. The fact that he has only 1 year left on a deal at a mid-range cap hit, doesn't really suggest it would take a 1st to move him. Here's a couple of recent examples of this:

June 22, 2019 - Toronto trades Patrick Marleau ($6.25M cap hit), a 2020 1st round pick (13th overall - Seth Jarvis), and a 2020 7th round pick (199th overall - Alexander Pashin) to Carolina for a 2020 6th round pick (177th overall - Axel Rindell). This move was a a pure cap dump. Although Marleau could still play in the league, he made it clear it would only be for San Jose and Toronto needed to clear cap space to sign Marner to his extension. Marleau was only owed $4.25M in real money ($3M signing bonus/$1,25M over last season) that Carolina paid but still had his $6.25M cap hit on their cap but bought out Marleau immediately.

September 26, 2020 - New York Rangers trade Marc Staal ($5.7M cap hit) and a 2021 2nd round pick to Detroit in exchange for "future considerations" (basically nothing). This is the definition of a cap dump. Staal play was declining and his cap hit needed to be traded to make room for numerous signings that the Rangers needed to make with RFA's. Staal was only owed $3.2M in real money as New York had already paid his $1M signing bonus, but Detroit still took on the full $5.7M cap hit in the deal.

Now we come to Koskinen. If he's moved in the offseason, he'll have 1 season left on his deal with a $4.5M cap hit and he'll be owed $4.5M as well in real money, with none of that being a signing bonus so it's paid out over the course of next season. It's also worth noting that if a team wants to buy out Koskinen, it will only cost them $1.5M in terms of cap hit and real money for 2 seasons - this actually saves them $1.5M in real money, and saves $3M in cap space in year one, but adds $1.5M in cap space in year 2. So why would someone with a lower cap hit than both of Staal and Marleau, and only $25K more in real money (if he stays on the roster and isn't bought out) cost a 1st? I doubt that he would. It's far more likely to be a prospect that a team likes because of the uncertainty of the draft and prospects for the next 2 seasons because of the pandemic.

So I'm sorry, but both these comments seem more to the "fan's view" side of things, rather than the logically thinking and how the league has worked over the last few seasons.

This isn't a few seasons ago, times have significantly changed. That wasn't a flat cap world back then. He's been awful this year and CBJ is looking for a retool not a rebuild so they don't want to take on 4.5m of uselessness. You're right it makes more sense to buy him out then trade him as a cap dump, but that's not what this ACGM is suggesting. It cost Toronto a first and Detroit who had ample cap space a 2nd. Maybe he costs a second or a prospect like you are suggesting, nobody really knows with a flat cap, either way CBJ definitely declines.

No need to apologize, you're probably right I have never paid much attention to cap dumps, so I'm not super familiar with their value, my comment was more about how lopsided this trade value was as suppose to the value of cap dump.

Blue Jackets have a little over $24M in cap space for next season with only 2 top guys to sign in Laine and Texier. Those 2 combined don't cost anywhere over $12M leaving $12M in cap space. This thread doesn't suggest anything about what Columbus does with Koskinen. They'd likely buy him out and then it only eats $1.5M in cap space, and they'd likely get a guy like Benson or Lavoie or a 2nd out of it, which isn't a bad deal at all for Columbus. I'd bet they'd highly consider that actually.

Yeah but the GM announced they are retooling not rebuilding, so they likely want a 2C in return for Laine and Elvis not a 1st and Holloway. I think we might be confused here ypu are probably right on the cap dump value, I am just saying the overall trade is something CNJ never considers, not the cap dump itself, you are right there if they get a 2nd or one of those prospects out of that they should definitely consider it.

I see Merzlikins on one side and Koskinen on the other and I tend to tune out the rest. Sure, getting Holloway would be awesome, but there's a bit too much baggage attached.
