Melnyk wants a veteran 1C and a defensive RHD

Created by: Matteo
Team: 2021-22 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: May 19, 2021
Published: May 19, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
According to his comments on a podcast today. I don't agree, I think we're better off riding out the rebuild, but there are a few options out there for both.

For the 1C, the two obvious ones are Eichel and Kuznetsov, but Eichel would be very expensive and is somewhat of a question mark for his surgery and Kuznetsov has supposed character issues which is the opposite of what Dorion's been looking for throughout the rebuild. This leaves us to pursue a free agent, and the closest thing to a 1C this offseason looks to be Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Signing him would be a long shot for Ottawa, but maybe Dorion can offer him a slight overpayment on a three-year deal, so that once the cap starts increasing again he can look for his big payday.

For the defensive RHD, the two that stand out to me in free agency are David Savard and Adam Larsson. I think the Sens are better off going after Larsson since he's two years younger. Either one would work though. Similar to Nuge, Larsson goes for a short-term deal on a bit of an overpayment so that he can get a nice long-term contract when teams are looking to spend more money. Leaving Edmonton also gives him the opportunity to finally stop being looked at as "the guy we traded Taylor Hall for."

Looking at this team as a best-case scenario of Eugene Melnyk's plan for the team (why he has any say in the team on the ice is beyond me), it looks like this would cause the Sens to have cap issues in two seasons as Batherson, Stutzle, Norris, Pinto, Formenton, Brannstrom, Mete, Gustavsson and maybe C. Brown, Paul, and Zub will all be looking for raises between now and then.

The moral of the story is that Melnyk is gonna screw everything up again and owners shouldn't be hands-on in the NHL.

I don't see BUF sending Eichel within the division unless the Sens overpay.
Kuznetsov likely has all Canadian teams in his NTC.

RNH is a possibility, it'll take 7 years though. Larsson is rumoured to being very close to an extension in EDM.

Sean Monahan could be a possibility for the Sens. Melnyk might like that he used to play for the 67's

Yeah Savard would probably be more likely than Larsson since he definitely won't be able to re-sign in Tampa with their cap space. I also looked at Monahan, that might be a good fit too since he's cheaper, younger, and Calgary might be looking to move him. I didn't know about the 67's factor too.

That'd be a steep price to pay for Eichel, if that's what it takes then I don't think it's worth it for Ottawa.

He can want that, doesn’t mean he’s going to spend to the max on them in the open market

He was complaining about losing money today

Hopefully he doesn't get it, Norris could very well turn into a 1C, or even Pinto, and if we gain another right handed defensive dman then that probably means we'll lose Zub in two years which would suck.

Considering they tried that this Stepan and grudbranson. Probably in his mind those are vet 1c and Defensive RHD level targets

You'd be getting Eichel. You can't expect to give up scraps and get him.

Adding a 1C and in the same breath complaining about losing money. I really do feel bad for Sens fans.

The right side is fine for now with Zaitsev, Zub, Brown.
The team needs a 2nd pair LD until Sanderson arrives.
Brannstrom (66 NHL games) has had his good moments, and his not so good moments.
Mete (199 NHL games) isn’t the top4 answer.
Ryan Graves is the guy I’d target.

I know it'll cost a lot for the team that gets him, I just don't think it makes as much sense for Ottawa as it does for say NYR or LAK.

It actually makes a ton of sense for Ottawa. Eichel fits their timeline to win and they have the prospects and cap space to do it. Sens don't have a legit 1C option in the organization anywhere. If you wanna contend you need that. By the time the next one is available in a draft it's next season or 2023 which Ottawa plans to be competitive so they won't be drafting #1 overall to get it
