I would have thought that everyone could agree that you (and Edmonton) have already proven that the top-heavy-roster theory doesn't work. Having all of your firepower focused on a few superstars makes it too easy to neutralize them. (Look at how easily Winnipeg dealt with the Oilers.) Here, you've resigned Hyman at an increase and exchanged one $11 million player (Marner) for two $13 million players (Hall and Reinhart). That's only a modest improvement on what you have now. And that is at the cost of drastically weakening the defense, even if Rielly is going to walk in another year.
I think that you'd do much better foregoing Hyman and Hall and Reinhart and get more intermediate-type, quality players like Coleman and McCann and McGinn and Cizikas, etc.
No chance we'd trade Byfield for Marner straight up. Little chance we'd trade Vilardi and Walker for him. Too early to give up our 2022 sweepstakes ticket.
